Hiking poles in carry-on luggage vs checked luggage

I went to various sites including tsa. I couldn’t find anything definite. If they are catagorized as sporting goods they suggest checked luggage. But if tsa recognizes them as walking canes or similar then they would allow them to be carried on. I don’t mind checking them but that would be the only reason that I would check luggage.

My wife just did the Crested Butte to Aspen hike and took poles and had to check them.

Have flown with them as carryon before, but I’ve read mixed results from folks.

Check them in. I’ve heard a few people say they carried on but it’s not common.
This summer in Durango I saw the collection of trekking poles at the airport. You could supply every hiker in Louisiana with them.

Reminds me of a trip departing Jackson years ago, they had looked like several hundred canisters of bear spray they had collected
