We’re looking to take a trip somewhere for our 10th anniversary at the beginning of the summer. Our initial plan was San Francisco for a couple of days then to Napa. I’ve kinda soured on spending time on San Fran but not opposed to Napa. Is there enough to do in that area for 5-6 nights? Give me some other suggestions on places to go.

It’s a wonderful area, even if you don’t want to spend time in the city proper. Fly into SFO, pick up a car, then drive to Muir Woods...gaze at the giant redwoods, walk the paths/boardwalks, drive down to Muir Beach, eat at the Pelican Inn: LINK, or maybe even spend a night there. You can watch the sun go down over the Pacific while sitting on the beach.

Keep on driving up to Point Reyes.....go check out the lighthouse & lifeboat station, go to the Point Reyes creamery for excellent cheese, hike, etc. Drive up to Hog Island oysters, spend the night in Inverness at Manka’s.

There is PLENTY to do/see/eat/drink in the Bay Area wholly outside the city and Napa/Sonoma.

I second avoiding San Francisco. You can do all the days in Napa, eating and drinking leisurely. The Westin hotel makes a great base.
If you want to do Napa and something else, you can rent a car and camp in the Redwoods, or spend some time gambling and hiking around Lake Tahoe.

How is this even a question in your mind?

Because I’ve never been and don’t know much about the area?

Why? I spent almost two years working in the Bay area. I get the perceptions people have but it's one of the great cities in the world to visit. Alcatraz. Angel Island. Muir Woods. Chinatown. You can spend days in the area.

Not your thing? Drive up to Mendocino. One of our favorite trips. Tour the wineries along the way in the Russian River valley.

Or drive down to Monterey. Tour Carmel.

Google all of this and you'll see that it's true.

Look into spending some time Sonoma County. More authentic and more relaxed, IMO.

There is plenty to do in Napa and Sonoma Valley. Everyone I’ve talked to who has been to SFO proper recently has said that stories of rampant homeless, used needles and crap on the streets are true. Fly into SFO or Oakland, rent a car, and skip the Bay Area.

Stay here a couple of nights and include the Sonoma region. This place is fantastic for anniversary things...
