Used to go every year in college (20 years ago). Great atmosphere. You can rent a cabin around the area pretty easily, or you could then. Basically if the weather's nice, you just walk around the strip which is this pseudo-German looking area. Eat and drink until you fall down. On the weekends, all of the bars and restaurants will be full of football fans watching the games while drinking out of a large stein.

We stayed last year in the spring time as a stopping point on the way to DC.

We are going to a wedding in Dahlonega in October. Just realized how close we were to Helen and the wedding is in October.

Went a few years ago. I didn't care for it. We went on a weekend with perfect weather, and it was just too crowded to really enjoy it. Tons of bikers were there, which I don't have a problem with, but the constant revving of their bikes got old really fast. The town itself was kind of cheesy to me as well.

ETA - But I see you'll already be in the area for a wedding. Don't let my review deter you from going if you'll already be close by. I just woulnd't plan a trip around going there.

I was there 2-3 years ago and will never return, there was a loud aggressive cop and car with flashing lights on every corner.

Seems the entire city is funded by misdemeanor tickets given to young dumb tourist.

I had no issues just not my idea of a good time as I witnessed nothing rising to the level of response displayed by the local revenue collection task force.

Yes, if you do end up going make sure you have a designated driver. The cop presence is strong those weekends, and when we were there it seemed like their main focus was monitoring drunk drivers. Most places there let designated drivers eat and drink for free.

All I saw was overaggressive in your face enforcement of open container violations, they did not have time for petty things like drunk driving.

It was way OTT, we had just happened into town and planned to stay but that changed our mind, we had a great breakfast at some German style joint on the way out of town and went elsewhere.

It is very meh at best. Helen camping is great, but the town is a tourist trap. Bunch of bikers and young kids.

Helen has been on a downward slide to epic levels of trashiness and the tornadoes a few years back completed the transformation. It use to be kinda cool with the European theme, but now it’s all biker bars and trash shops.

Much nicer small towns in the area to check out. Being in nature around there is still fantastic though.

You would think this would be common sense since the roads in this area can be quite twisty and driving in this area drunk would be monumentally retarded. What kind of piece of shite would think it was a good idea even without cop presence?

Oh yeah, now I remember.

Too many nice things to see and do in Dahlonega and surrounding areas to go to the white trash mini Gatlinburg that is Helen. Go to Wolf Mountain Winery, Cavender Creek, Monteluce, Three Sisters or Frogtown. Go to the Square. Hike Raven Cliff Falls or Preachers Rock instead.

The wife and I went down on the motorcycle a few years back. Traffic was horrible, super crowded and the wait to get food was over an hour anywhere you went. I stayed the obligatory few hours to humor the wife and got out of there. Without the crowds it would have ok, but Octoberfest wasn't worth it to me.

I’ve been and would definitely never go again. Had to wait to be served at restaurants. It’s an old town and that’s not my choice for a vacation. We enjoyed other towns nearby. Myrtle Beach was another old run down town, also. Just my 2 cents.

Getting in a little late here but thought I would add my two cents. We were there last summer and I found Helen, GA filthy. The town needed a good pressure washing. I was really disappointed as I had looked forward to going. I can only imagine what Octoberfest activities must be live.
