We will be staying on base in Yokosuka, but will spend at least one night in Tokyo. It is apparently very accessible by train so we will probably make some day trips.
We will only be about 45 minutes from Yokohama so we want to spend some time there, too.
Have any of you been and have some must-sees? Would love some guidance. I don't want to overplan but would prefer a little bit of structure.

If possible, Tsukiji Fish Market one morning.
Enjoy the cleanliness and efficiency of Tokyo.

I've done quite a few trips to Tokyo (and going there next week ) but a few other recommendations:
-Hamarikyu Gardens - Really pretty garden surrounded by some of the big tall buildings there. Very cheap to check out and spend a little stroll.
-Ueno Zoo is really cool, I thought.
-Odaiba Island has nice mall shopping but is a cool island with a great view of the Skyline. Really neat at night time.
Hope this helps a little

We just spent a week there and stayed in Ueno in Tokyo. You could spend a couple weeks in Tokyo alone and never grow bored. If you have a Gmail address I can share a Google Map I created of stuff we found that seemed interesting.

We have a hotspot already that we will bring with us.
Any thoughts on a texting service? I have WhatsApp already but open to suggestions of better options. We are staying with my sister and bro-in-law and will need to touch base with them.

In Yokosuka is the IJN Mikasa.
It was the flagship of the Japanese fleet that whupped the Russian fleet in 1905.
For me it was a must-see.
Have a great time, go to a KFC there, they have some weird shite for sale.
The one in Yokosuka is used to Americans.

We are staying one night in a traditional ryokan in Tokyo, super stoked about that. It's about 5 minutes from the Senso Temple, so we will definitely visit that.
Sadachiyo
We are going tomorrow to get our international driver's licenses so we can do Real-life Mario Kart
I also really want to go to a Japanese tea garden.

I've driven all over the world that I've been EXCEPT Japan.
You're insane for doing that with Public transport and cabs as such good alternative options.
Steering wheel is on the wrong side of the dashboard, you have to drive on the wrong side of the road AND all the signage is in Japanese?

I don't have a death wish!
We fully intend on taking FULL advantage of public transportation while there...we live in Boston so we are train people now.
Both my sis and my brother-in-law have licenses and cars if need be.
Real-life Mario Kart is an actual activity where you can dress up as Princess Peach or Yoshi and you drive go-karts through downtown Tokyo. You just have to have an international DL to do it.

yea..
i temporarily left tokyo a few days ago.. and there is absolutely no desire to drive there.
tokyo metro in particular is huuge...dont bother trying to plan too much.
...except with housing(esp if using airbnb)
if you find something decent...reserve early.
tokyo is one of the few cities where i personally prefer to splurge on the known hotel.
for eating my MO is to walk down a side street and then hit up whatever seems popular with locals(cant go wrong with noodle/ramen houses)....or go to whatever is top rated in foursquare(for the area)
if near shinjuku check out the robot cabaret show..is a bit sensory overload but it may be the most spectacularly japan experience you can have.
for nightlife..
imo roppongi.. is where you want to be(if you are foreigner).
ever wanted to spend quality time with your favorite "friendly" j-av star or a j-pop wannabes...well, this where you make it happen

I've driven in Japan. Not that wild. Signs are easy to understand. Many in English. Hardest part is remembering to watch for and not to run over pedestrians when taking left turns. They frown upon that.

Y'all. I am ONLY driving a go-kart. An international drivers license is required. There will be no real cars involved.
I did find a bar where an actual monkey is the waitress...added that to the list.
