My opinion here without knowing all your details, is you probably need to find an American chain hotel to keep you are your wife happy. I have no idea what the rome budget for those hotels would be, its probably going to be pricey.

ETA: But the Rome central tourist area is not a huge city, its very walkable if you stay around the central area between the Coliseum and Vatican area.

You also need to know that Rome is not on the water. So getting to the cruise terminal is not exactly walking distance, its like an hour away. So you need to plan that also.

We stayed a fews nights before our cruise at the Hotel Caravita.

Stayed there way back in 2007 and can confirm. Good choice.

It was also one of the hotels the Griswalds stayed in in European Vacation.
