Anyone ever been here? Going in June. Renting a house in Hartswell. Also renting a boat. Should we rent a car? Any recommendations?

When I visited Exuma my group rented a van for the week. We stayed in the Mosstown area. Van mainly used to get to grocery or back and forth from Georgetown where most of the departures for water based activity is located. Ate at "Catch A Fire" restaurant one evening which was a nice location and good food. The best food we had all week was from the fish fry shack on the side of the highway between Georgetown and Mosstown.

*** We didn't venture into Hartswell. It may have more places to eat and drink than Mosstown did (zero). Found that Georgetown was the main hub of activity. I will say that anything you can do by boat will be more fun than any shore based activities on the island.

My favorite activities on Exuma
1. Bonefishing

2. Go drink at Chat N Chill on stocking island. You can do this on your rental boat. You can fill up a whole day cruising up and down Stocking to cool beach/snorkel spots.

3. We took a trip on a boat that left the northern tip of Exuma and snorkeled at Thunderball Grotto and visited Compass Cay. Fun day trip. Forgot the name of the company that ran these trips.

Chat N Chill is a must. Last time I was there Tiger Woods yacht was parked nearby.

Renting a house in Hartswell

Hartswell is my favorite area to stay in. Which house are you staying?
Hartswell is great because you are right at Moriah Harbour Cay National Park and the beaches are unbelievable. You can get in your boat and in 3 minutes you are on a wonderful beach with no one else in sight.
Yes you should also rent a car preferably a jeep. A good place to eat is right across the small bridge to little Exuma follow the road out to a place called Santanas. It is just a little open air shack but the food is great and it is right on the water. On Sunday you should go to the Chat N Chill on stocking island. They have pig roast on the beach and cold Kaliks. Also try the Conch salad that they make right in front of you. Catch a Fire Bar and Grill is also a nice place to have dinner right on the water. Shirleys at the Fish Fry is a fun spot at night where the locals hang out.
Exuma Water Sports has several different half day and full day boat charters that carry you out to see the swimming pigs and other sites. It is well worth the trip.
Here is a link to an interactive map that will show you different places to explore while on you boat. Exuma map

Something that I was glad I carried with me was a couple of the Cooler Shock freezer packs. If your house doesn't have a big ice maker it can be a hassel to find ice for you coolers everyday. These Ice packs are flat as an envelope when you get them so they are easy to pack in your luggage. When you get there you just add water and use and iron to seal the ends of the pack. Throw it in the freezer and the next day your cooler will be ready to keep drinks cold all day.

We rented our jeep from Thomson's Car Rental which is right outside of the airport. Walk outside straight across the street and you are there.
You absolutely need a boat and a car to enjoy the island to the fullest.

Another thing is to be aware of the tides. Around Hartswell the water in some parts is only 2 to 3 feet deep during low tide so a smaller boat is nice for dragging across sand bars. We use a 15' and a 19' Boston Whaler. Here is little Rah Rah.

Here is a beach that is directly across from where you will be staying in Harstwell.

Have you been down there before? There is some good fishing around that little bridge.

Good to know. Did you rent a boat for the whole time you were there? We have 8 in our party. I doubt we all want to ride at the same time but I would like to have a boat handy and not depend on a guide.

Yea we had a boat everyday we were there. We used it everyday to. The beaches you can get to with the boat are just amazing. Getting gas is kind of a crap shoot though. Sorry man no gas today maybe tomorrow. Sorry man the power is out no gas today maybe tomorrow. Sorry man the gas boat broke down maybe tomorrow.

People down there are definitely laid back. We would stop at these little roadside bars and they would cook some great food and the locals are really friendly never felt unsafe. One bar owner told me everybody knows everybody on the island so crime is virtually non existent.
Tropic of Cancer beach is near where you are staying and is really nice spot to get to by car.
Coco Plum beach is on the other end of the island but it is a great place for the kids to find sand dollars. There are also swings in the water that make great pictures.

Sweet. One more question. Where you stayed, were you able to tie up the boat or did you have to trailer it when you wanted to use it?

Have a house rented on Hoopers Bay for a week in July. Can’t wait.

Is the boating doable for someone without a ton of experience?

Also, for others benefit, looks like you can take a water taxi out to chat n chill.

We had a boat dock at our house so the boat stayed with us all week.
The water is so clear you can tell where the shallow water is. It’s good to have a smaller boat though to drag over shallow sand bars.

Here is a link to the tide charts. You have to go through some shallow water to get to some of the great beaches. Stay in the blue water.

Another thing the kids liked was bringing a t-shirt to hang on the wall at Chat N Chill or Santana’s. Sign it and date and when you or your friends are there they can leave a message on it.
