Grand Cayman Recs....

take the route 9 bus to spotts beach and swim with the sea turtles. kind of a low key beach with picnic tables and a porta potty. the buses run fairly regularly for $3/cayman.

"driver(# people) stop please" at the grocery along the way for beers and some snacks. the current is kind of strong, so i would recommend flippers.

It's in little strip mall on West Bay Road about a half a mile north of George Town.

We passed on Grand Cayman this year for Curacao but we did our research anyway. Sting Ray City, the Cayman Turtle Center and the Queen Elizabeth eth Botanical Garden all made the list of stuff to not miss. There are also the ruins of Fort George and the flip flop tree off the beaten path to check out. Lots of good opportunities to snorkel, including Starfish Point, Spotts Beach, Cheeseburger Reef and Connolly's Cove. They also have a bioluminescent bay that looks easy to access.

Every place we went took American dollars, but gave change in Cayman currency, so we never exchanged any cash. Just watch out for them short changing you. We never had it happen, but were told to keep an eye out for it. Most places also take a credit card, so whichever you're comfortable with. You'll need cash to tip fishing guide and sting ray city guides, assuming you booked a charter for both, but they also gladly take American dollars.

If you weren't already prepared, everything there is expensive. More expensive than other Caribbean islands I've been to.

One, when I went the exchange rate was around $1US to $.75 Cayman, so we were already behind the 8 ball.

12 packs of cheap US beer(Bud, Miller, etc) were around $30 Cayman, so closer to $40 US. There is a brewery on the island and their beer was a little cheaper, but not much.

Grocery staples were all about 2-3 times what they are stateside - bacon was about $30 for a pound, box of cereal $8-$10, etc.

Restaurants were surprisingly not too bad, but we never ate anywhere real nice. 2 adults and 2 kids and our meals probably averaged around $80. One was over $100, but we hung out there longer and had a few drinks.

So I think I had that wrong. 12 packs were $20 Cayman, so closer to the $30 US. Sorry.


The White Tip Lager from the local brewery was the best one I had from them. I didn't like the Caybrew at all.
