Most europeans don't wear basic running and athletic shoes every day.

two summers ago in Paris/Barcelona... damn near every other person was wearing Stan Smiths, of all things... and the others were wearing Vans..

I had a pair of Allbirds, I bought right before the trip and even though wool (i was there in August), they were comfortable...

I also brought a pair of Scarpa Mojitos..

Vans and Puma are extremely popular among younger people, essentially if under 30 you can pull it off

Any shoe you feel like wearing. Europeans for the most part dress more like most middle class well raised Americans. Just don't dress like a sloppy LP guy or ghetto gangsta and you good.

Just got back and saw every shoe imaginable. My suggestion is two fold:
1. take a casual pair (running or athletic shoe) for daytime traversing and a pair of dress shoes for the evening. On the days we had dinner plans at nicer places, we always came back to the hotel to shower and change.
2. make sure all shoes are broken in well in advance

That being said, whatever you are comfortable in will be fine. I found people in most places were overly casual.

Thanks. Yeah, now that I think about it we’ll probably be heading back to the room before we go to a nice dinner. I’ve found it helpful to search the destinations on Instagram and see what most people are wearing. Judging by their accounts they are French (probably French tourist) and are mostly wearing casual shoes already mentioned like Converse, Vans, Allbirds and Stan Smiths.

Sorry for the slight derail, but when did those Adidas start being called Stan Smith’s? Lol, I had no idea and played soccer my whole life and had multiple pairs back in the day.

Yes these are very popular in europe and a great example.

According to Wikipedia since the 60s when he received royalties for using his name. Maybe you’re thinking of a different shoe? He was a tennis player not soccer.

This is what I was talking about. Appears there are like 15 adidas shoes that are extremely similar, so my bad. This is the superstar, there's the Campus, Samba, Stan Smith, etc. Apparently I don't have a good eye for shoe fashion.

Clark’s Desert Boot

Regardless of your shoe choice, make sure you break them in prior. You don’t want to spend Day 3 of your trip hobbling around Paris asking Ou est la pharamacie?
