Hi all,

The dates should be 11/21/2020 to 12/3/2020. Traveling with toddler so that's a consideration. Fairly basic itinerary first timer trip.

Landing in Tokyo at 7pm on the 22nd. Will go to hotel that night and train to Kyoto the next morning. So on the ground useful days are 11/23 to 12/2 (10 days)

I loosely have:
11/23 through 11/26 Kyoto

11/30 through 12/2 Tokyo

Question is what to do 11/27 through 11/29?
Do I stay in Kyoto and day trip Nara and Osaka? Making Kyoto base from 11/23 to 11/28 or 29?

Do I use one of those days to head to Hakone for 11/27 and 28 and train to Tokyo on 11/29? Add a day to Tokyo?

It seems like any other onsen town or small town west/northwest of Tokyo (Takayama/Tsumago/Kusatsu) would be too difficult to reach and not worth the squeeze with travel time, but experts please educate me. Otherwise, splitting it 5 and 5 is appealing with the kid and day trip out from the base.

Any other suggestions welcome.

What prefecture are you planning on staying in when you're in Tokyo? Each district is like a completely different city with it's own vibe.

We are heading back over from 1/9-1/24 and are planning to travel to Kyoto and Osaka for about 4 days, with a daytrip to Nara planned.

From Tokyo, you're within about 30/45 minutes from Yokohama and Kawasaki (of course, it depends on what part of Tokyo...it's a huge city). Yokohama has the Cup-O-Noodle Museum! You can build your own cup-o-noodle.

I would recommend Kamakura for sure, if y'all are just looking for something low-key and chill. It's got lots of little restaurants and cafes, good shopping, and it's fun to just wander around and explore. It's also home to one of the Giant Buddhas!

We stay on the Naval base at Ikego, which is about an hour and some change from Tokyo, and we pass through all of those places when we go to Tokyo.

Japan is amazing! You're not going to want to come back.

Leaning on staying in Shinjuku.

I'm just really curious if I should just do the two bases and day trip or perhaps make the effort to go to somewhere like Kusatsu in-between. I think Kusatsu will be too far but if Hakone day trip from Tokyo is best alternative I can do that. Just don't know if I'm overlooking something.

I'd recommend Osaka for a day or two. The Osaka castle is cool, Dotonbori is pretty neat at nice. You can even sneak down to Kobe. It's not that far from Kyoto to Osaka either.

Otherwise, I think you have a really good agenda.

Are you planning on flying directly from US to Tokyo? I’d look into flying directly into Kyoto if you have no reason to land in Tokyo. It’s 3 hours by bullet train between them? I don’t think your flight prices will be that much worse to add that leg and then you don’t have to wake up and take the bullet train for 3 hours. You will take it from Kyoto to Tokyo anyway, so you get the experience just not twice.

A lot of people don’t count their travel time and cost of trains in their airfare, but if it costs you a morning of travel and a train fare to do id look into that. Give you another 1/2 day that way.

Eta: the other option is Tokyo first and flying home from Kyoto. Flight times and prices may work out better.

I've done the skip through before in Peru, where we landed in Lima but went ahead and connected to Cusco. If the timings worked out I would have considered it and actually had it planned until available flights shifted from Narita to Haneda with different timings going from 3pm to 7pm arrival.

Last flights out of Haneda leave when my plane is scheduled to land at 7pm. Also, you fly to Osaka and then have to train to Kyoto, which is another hour or so until the hotel.

With a kid I'd much rather just get to bed and hit the train the next morning. Otherwise we'd be pushing 11pm local time getting to the hotel, and him (or my wife) losing their mind most likely.

Thanks. I've heard good things about Osaka. I went ahead and booked 5 nights in Kyoto. I can just decide by how well we're moving what we'll do that day. Keeps us flexible and lets us go slow.

The other option would be to take the train straight from Narita to Kyoto, it's really easy to catch the bullet train from the airport. Leaving the airport for a hotel then travelling to kyoto kills a bunch of time. I'm making my second trip there over christmas, just doing kyoto and tokyo this time. If you want a nice day trip from Kyoto, you can go down to hiroshima and miyajima island. both are cool. I've never been to osaka or kobe so can't comment on those.

Nevermind, just saw your note about kid and wife not wanting to get to kyoto late. I would tell them to suck it up and just get to Kyoto. If they are worn out, it will help them adjust time zones faster.

Last train out is 8:51pm from Haneda to make 12am arrival In Kyoto.

I don't think the "lost time" is all that lost and in any event, is a close call if flight is the least bit delayed. Though my experience with these long flights if they depart on time is they arrive much earlier than scheduled.

I'm staying at an expensive property in Kyoto at peak season so the risk of wasting points is high and I'm definitely not going to be able book rack rate. In any event I get to Kyoto between 10/12am the next day. It's really a matter of maybe an hour difference in actual tourist time if you consider I'd probably sleep in to 8/9am in Kyoto if I went the whole way.

In Tokyo I'd stay at a hotel next to station and be in route no later than 9am.

It's only open to the public for about 60 days out of the year...we were last there in Oct. '18 so it had closed for the season. However, we were allowed to drive up to the 5th station and it was spectacular.

Aside from the lookouts, there is a shrine, a restaurant or two, gift shops. Eating a curry and drinking a Japanese beer while gazing out at Mt. Fuji is a hell of a way to spend an afternoon. And Japanese pancakes! I like the custard-filled ones.

We had access to my sister's car so we were able to drive there, but I think they have shuttles that run from various spots in Tokyo. I would recommend Fuji to absolutely anyone, but it is an entire day's worth of travel.

Yokosuka

My sister and brother-in-law work on the main base, so we spend a day dicking around in Yokosuka. The Honch is pretty fun, we drank away a couple of hours in the Krazy Chu-Hi bar...only 3 or 4 seats in the whole bar and it's super divey, but that's our kind of place.

We are planning on going back to Yokosuka for yakaniku one night, but we probably won't spend very much tiime there since we have so many other things planned.

We are also spending a few days on Sado Island. It's been called Japan's most mysterious island. There are beaches, mountains, hot springs, and a bunch of sake breweries. Sounds awesome, and it should be pretty secluded in January.

Man, I can't wait to be back!

Ya, I'm hopeful to do a day out at an onsen that looks out to Fuji.

Seems like a pretty cool experience. Just need good weather.

lol.. I forgot all about the Honch. The buy me drink bars were always a shite show. I cannot for the life of me remember the drink that we would start off with, but it tasted like kool-aid and had a snake in it. A couple of those drinks would mess anyone up.

Good times
