I have a wedding to go to in Ft worth in July. Really only been here once or twice when visiting TCU/SMU. What is a good hotel/ good atmosphere near the medical center there? Or is there a better area within a short drive from this area?

You’ll be happy with any hotel downtown. Great restaurants and nightlife.

Is the stockyards considered downtown?

No they are a few miles away.
There are several good hotels in downtown Fort Worth it just depends on how much money you want to spend. Find something near Sundance Square and you will be in the heart of it.

If you like mexican food, you have to go to Joe T Garcia's. Get a picture of margaritas. Don't drive. They are strong.

Yep. Can't go wrong with either the Embassy Suites or the Courtyard Marriott right on Sundance Square.
ETA: more expensive, but the Renaissance hotel in the same area is quite nice.

If you like mexican food don't go to Joe Ts, its a tourist trap. Go to Los Paisanos or Los Asaderos near the Stockyards for real mexican food. Joe Ts does have a nice patio to drink a marg but that's about it. Hotels, anything downtown, the Omni is ware we stay when we make the long trek over from dallas.

What Zappa said.
Joe T's is fun, but the food sucks.
Downtown/Sundance Square:
Worthington (Marriott)
Omni
Sinclair (Marriott)
And the other usual chain hotels are there, but are all really well done.
