I’m going to pick up a puppy from a breeder in the next few weeks. This involves a flight from South Dakota to Dallas and then Dallas to Baton Rouge.

Anyone ever flown with a puppy? Looking got some practical tips. She will be in the cabin with me in a small carrier.

Be sure to make a reservation with the airline and pay the pet fee.

We did this about a year ago.

Make sure you are good with your flight and the airline.

Walk the shite out of her just before boarding, so she sleeps on the plane.

Locate dog relief stations in the airports so she can go.

There will be accidents, so make sure to have poop bags and wipes/paper towels.

Get ready for lots of attention--people love puppies and everyone will want to pet.

Good luck! It was not as bad as I thought it might be.

We foster dogs, I have flown probably 15 dogs around the country. All of the tips so far are good.

How old is the dog? Every airline has different rules. I think on Delta, the dog has to be at least 8 weeks old and have certain shots. So check on that before you leave. And definitely call ahead and reserve, they usually only have like 6 spots available per flight.

Hopefully it's not a yappy dog. I got threatened with getting kicked off once because the dog was nervous and wouldn't shut up. So if you are worried about that, give Benadryl before boarding.

Also it's hit and miss with flight attendants if you can hold the dog or it has to be in the carrier the whole time. Most times they do not care, but I have gotten some power mad FAs. Got yelled at for having the dogs head sticking out the carrier once.

awesome. thanks everyone!

Ive read something about not using the pet relief areas in the airports with puppys. I was going to bring puppy pads and just go in a family bathroom.

Also, she will be 8 weeks old when I pick her up. Can they have benadryl that young?

Will work but I’d do melatonin with a puppy.

Yeah good call. I would also wrap a pee pad around the bottom of the carrier in case she pees during the flight.

There is an all natural version of it called Rescue Remedy that is puppy-safe and been my go to for airplane travel with pups for years. Flew nonstop from Portland to Atlanta and the dog slept the entire 5 hours.

No. I get my pups on the side of the road.

And double check to see if your pet carrier fits and/or is even allowed as carry on luggage on a regional jet.

You probably won't be on any wide body jets if South Dakota and Baton Rouge are in your itinerary, and that will shrink the size under your seat for a pet carrier.

Ive done my fair share of that. My dog just died in May and I had her for 13 years. That was 13 years of the most uncontrollable shedding ive ever experienced. Went through 3 roombas with her. I cant do that again so Im getting one that doesnt shed
