Planning for a trip this fall or next spring depending upon travel restrictions. A group of three couples who have all traveled together very well. We enjoy the outdoors and great food/wine. One of the couples spent two weeks in Italy hitting all the highlights for their honeymoon.

I am thinking this for a general itinerary before I get to specifics.

Fly to Rome or Florence - take train to Cinque Terre. Spend 3 nights (1st day will not be great due to flight to Italy followed by train to Cinque Terre).

Train or Bus to Florence for 3 days two nights.

Rent Car and drive to Tuscany for a week (AirBnB or Agrotourism)

Drive to Rome, turn car in and spend two nights in Rome before leaving for the States.

Given the target audience, what are your thoughts?

Isn’t Florence in Tuscany?

Not trying to be a smart arse, but I would ask the couple you are traveling with that spent two weeks there.

I really enjoyed Tuscany and would like to go back, but 10 days seems a bit much considering all the other stuff available near by.

We generally like to spend a lot of time in a region even if it means 2 or 3 trips to that country.

The couple that went on the honeymoon like this idea but I wanted some other feedback as they did 6-7 cities in two weeks.

Although this will be my 11th trip to Europe, my only Italian experience is a couple of days in Rome as a college student.

I just did Rome/Florence/Chianti area for 10 days. I would spend more time in Florence personally. I guess if you’re looking for something more laid back the Tuscany Airbnb would be the choice.

I have some restaurant recs I’ll drop in here when I have time.

I can recommend an agritourismo if you’d like. We enjoy that relaxing way of travel.

I’d think your flight paths are going to be into Milan or Rome.

Got you covered. Stay here La Canonica di Cortine

We have stayed there twice, most recently for Easter week 2018. It is a wonderful place about half way between Florence and Siena. The thing we did last time was fly in to Florence, get a rental car, and spend a week there exploring the Tuscan hills. Then we turned the car back in in Florence and spent 3 nights at the Davanzati Hotel in Florence which is a nice little hotel in a great location. From there we took the train to Venice to end the trip, but you could head south to Rome if you want.

On a previous stay at La Canonica di Cortine we did Florence as a day trip.(about 20 miles north). We also drove to the Cinque Terra as a day trip.

Le Trappoline

This is in Gaoile in Chianti which is smack dab in the middle of the Chianti Classico region. You're about an hour out of Florence. Isodi is our favorite vineyard in Tuscany. The family that owns it are fantastic people. You'd have fairly short drives for day trips. I'd suggest Montalcino (Brunello wine) and Montepulciano as well as Greve and Radda.

Why yes I have. Tip. Do not park in the lot at the bottom of the hill unless your enjoy climbing a couple hundred steps. There's a parking lot up top as well.

Great views and a good tour. Great wine as well. I order a case or two a year from them.

ETA: Do a wine tasting at La Fortezza in Montalcino. You can taste every Brunello under the sun there.

Here's the aftermath of our last tasting there.

Yes I have been to Ricasolli.

Old historic castle on beautiful grounds. Parts you can tour. Other parts you can't because the family still lives there. Great wines available in tasting room at the bottom of the hill.

The recipe for Chianti Classico wine was developed here.

I just did Florence and Rome last month.

I preferred Florence, but it’s definitely a personal preference question.

I thought Florence had better food, was easier to get around, less crowded and still had solid sights/things to do.

Rome definitely has more to keep you busy with Vatican, coliseum, pantheon, etc. we hit those highlights in a few days and headed to Florence. I’ve been so busy but I plan to write up a basic review of the trip that includes recommended tours, things to do and restaurants.

I love Florence but I think most would say Rome because there is so much to see there.

Can stay at a castle in Tuscany.
Castello delle Serre for instance.
LINK

Good jumping off point for Montalcino and Montepulciano.

pend more of your time outside the big cities. We did Volterra, Lucca, Bomarzo, and Orvieto along with Florence. I think 3 days in Florence would be perfect. We did 2-1/2 and missed a couple of things.
I think hoping form small town to small town in between the cities makes a perfect trip. The change of pace keeps things interesting and keeps from getting burnt out.
No worries it gives me something to go back for.
