Just about anywhere in Manhattan is safe these days. Once you establish your budget, just google “best areas to stay in manhattan”.

They will give you the vibe of each area. Just pick which ones you like the best. We try to stay in a different area each time.

If still uncertain, pick the area where the majority of the things you want to do. If all spread out, pick the area where the #1 thing you want to do. Or the ones that are times sensitive so you can walk instead of relying on subways.

First time, stay in Manhattan. Can usually find less expensive hotel rooms in the lower financial district, especially near battery park and south ferry, around Broadway, Whitehall, Waters Street. From there you are within 2 blocks of a ton of subway lines that get you to mid-town in 15 minutes...4,5, 1, R, W. Also the Staten Island ferry is right there.

I’m seriously contemplating on staying in the Secaucus New Jersey area and hitching a ride via bus (Metro fee for a week of unlimited bus/subway $34 per person for a week) for a 13 minute ride to most attractions we want to see/experience.

If you're looking for honest opinions, I personally would not do that. Manhattan can be expensive, but know that there are a gazillion hotel rooms there at various price points. Not everyone who visits is holed up at the Plaza. Many are very reasonable and what you would pay in any other metro area.

NYC is very "alive" if that makes sense. You're going to want to wake up, get dressed, and walk right out of your hotel into your vacation. There's interesting stuff to see everywhere.

Speaking as someone who lives in the NYC area, don’t do this.

Daughter is on 43rd and 9th. It is incredibly convenient to get to Times Square subway and then anywhere else.

One of the best areas honestly. Close to Times Square but far enough away to be out of the fray. Subway entrance at 44/8th or walk to the subway entrance at 42nd and Times Sq. and can get you anywhere. Walk up directly up 9th to Central Park and can do the Upper East Side, Upper West, the Plaza, etc.. There are several reasonably priced hotels in that 43/9th area- a Marriott suites/town suits that has free breakfast and good reviews. The intercontinental hotel is nice and not outrageous. There’s a Westin at 43rd/8th. Plenty of very good and “affordable” restaurants of all different varieties.

ChatGPT can put together an itinerary for suggestions. Check out the Dumbo area, eat at the Time Out Market and walk back across the Brooklyn Bridge.
