It’s an in-state destination for people who live within the triangle. Offers some change of scenery, but it has absolutely nothing on any of those resort desert towns in Arizona.
If money isn’t a factor, just go to Sedona. It’s infinitely more scenic and offers way more to do in terms of recreational activities.

It is a one stop sign town.. they use to have a stop light but just converted it to blinking 4 way sign.. it made its name as being an art town..some guys put a bunch of stuff in a large commercial building.. they have done features( few art galleries).. but bigger stuff like things placed randomly on acres .. you have to stand outside and look across the horizon .. an art structure guy as you drive in made out of container trailers.. etc.. so it developed from that.. it is in scenic desert .. if you like a free desert vista.. flat.. it got popular with the uber wealthy and they have places out there.. sorta where they can chill and not be bothered when dining etc.. you will find big name people in the area.. millionaires.. occasionally billionaires.many own hidden places out there..
The town itself is rough looking and things never are what they appear like on the outside.. shops are small but the stuff inside is not usually friendly for your 5 year olds to wander by.. has a Michelin ( sp) restaurant… get the bison )..
Some fun shops..
It is in a three town triangle area..
fort Davis ( sorta like a Colorado feel.. macdonalds observatory pretty impressive )..alpine .. quaint little town .. regional college .. sorta thr commercial part of the area.. Marfa.. ( hard to describe.. hidden dining and bars like described).. people you see walking around will look like hippie very wealthy Austin cowboy all wrapped in one ( throw in burning man vibe also)..
Stay a night.. but go to fort David.. over to alpine ( maybe use alpine to go to big bend)…
Gauge hotel complex is historic and still functions.. it is the only thing in marathon and good to stay as part of a regional visit..and if you blink you miss everything.
Gauge family was 3 largest landowner I. Texas I think . Still a lot.. pretty much owned all the land down there..
The Prada structure is art and out of town.. I am not an instagram guy so have no idea why and what they are doing in area but I realize it is a thing..
Have family with property area but more hills.. some water etc.. the mountains get green and you will be surprised at the amount of wildlife if you go toward fort Davis , alpine and the springs area.
Lots of mystic on the lights. They have a place to park/camp outside of Marfa..

The main art collection in Marfa, the Chinati Foundation, which was created by Donald Judd in the 70s to exhibit his and other artists work is at a decommissioned military base that Judd bought. The old artillery sheds, 10-15 of them, have been renovated to exhibit work. There is also a museum in town and several other buildings Judd bought when the declining economy of the small town left them empty. But most of Judd's art is not going to appeal to the average person. I can't say I love it but I like the story of a famous NYC artist getting the hell out of NYC to live in the middle of nowhere. He had passed through the area when he was in the military and remembered loving the stark landscape.
The Hotel Paisano is a historic hotel in town where James Dean, Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor stayed while filming the movie "Giant" . The hotel used to have a small museum of memorabilia related to Giant in the lobby but I'm not sure if its still there. Its a nice place to stay or just hang out in the bar or eat at the restaurant although the food is just ok.
