My wife, I and 2 teenagers will be travelling in late July from DC to BR and are looking for a spot or 2 to stay on the way. We have already done Gatlinburg, Rafting in NC, Asheville and Blue Ridge a few times so looking for something else. Considering maybe the East Coast (anywhere along VA, NC, SC or GA) or also would be open to going through somewhere like Louisville then down if there are some better/unique vacation spots there. Open to doing 4 nights at one place or 2 nights one place and 2 nights another if the second is essentially on the way back to BR with not much detour. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Charleston, SC or Abington, Va. Both great areas.

Looks like the direct route would take you within a half hour or so of St. Paul, VA. I haven't been there but we are going for a long weekend next weekend based on a friend's recommendation.

We are staying at this hotel.

On Friday, we are renting ATVs from the hotel and doing the Spearhead Trails.

On Saturday, we are tubing the Clinch River.

On Sunday, we are biking the Creeper Trail. This may be a bit out of your way, as we're doing in on the way home to North Carolina. (I think it's maybe 50 miles from the hotel?)

This video review of the hotel and ATV trails was helpful in leading us to book.

There are a lot of options to get from DC to BR. Places to consider:

Pipestem State Park in southern WV. It's a 5 hour drive from DC and then 13 to BR so you probably would want to break that up.

Williamsburg, VA - lot of history there and nearby and Busch Gardens is there also.
Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head - there are not a lot of hotels here and most of the homes only will rent for a week in the summer. We usually stay at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Ocracoke Island, NC - drive down the outer banks to Hatteras and take the ferry. You should be able to take a boat to Portsmouth Island and may be able to rent ATV to ride around it. Portsmouth is a primitive island.
We haven't been to Ocracoke in several years. When you leave take the ferry to Cedar Island. We stayed in a B&B on Ocracoke a few years ago but there are some non-chain hotels.

Myrtle Beach - it's touristy but it has lot of things many teenagers like to do.

St. Simon/Jekyll Islands - these are laid back places near Brunswick, GA.

Cumberland Island - have to take a boat to get there out of St. Mary, GA. It's a day trip. We have not been here but it seems like a cool place to visit.
