Does a 4 year old need a govt issued photo ID to get through airline security?

Flying Delta...it didn’t even dawn on me until tonight. Will my son need a photo ID, or will he be good to go, as long as he’s with my wife?

From the TSA website here

"Children

TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States. Contact the airline for questions regarding specific ID requirements for travelers under 18."

You are always on point and provide solid advice. I’m beginning to wonder if you are an AI experiment.

Domestically? No.

International? He needs a passport.

Is your wife flying the entire trip with him, or will a non-parent be flying with him? If a non-parent is there, a notarized affidavit from you and your wife is recommended.

Good point on assuming the wife is flying the whole way with the kid. All I can think of is some nosy parent finding a DL agent suggesting human trafficking. These signs in ATL don't help the situation either

Also, OP

Bring kid’s birth certificate! We’ve been asked to show it before to the check-in desk.

My 2 year old has a passport I think it's good for 5 years. I was joking with my wife I can't wait to use it in 2-3 years when the picture looks nothing like her.

As said, you need a passport for immigration for international flights. No I'd for domestic.

Being I was born in the UK, I had a passport since right after birth.

The picture of me probably shitting myself would seem utterly useless for identification purposes even when it was current.
