Maybe. Weather determines what you need not only from an ability but a legal standpoint.

It is absolutely recommended. I made the trip out I70 once in a 2wheel drive SUV. It snowed and the drive was painful. Scary too. Ever since then I’ve always rented a vehicle with at least AWD. Sometimes these storms pop up quick along the route and aren’t as easy as you would think to anticipate.

I’ll add that CDOT does a great job of keeping the roads clear.

I drive a 2wd sedan with snow tires out here and am totally fine. I’d definitely get a 4wd or awd if snow tires aren’t an option.

FWD with snow tires > AWD with all seasons.

I’ve done it 100 times-Boulder to Frisco and never had a 4 wheel drive. And I did it a bunch in really bad winter conditions. So no.

I drove it in a blizzard once around midnight once in a RWD mini-van. I was full pucker the entire time. No one else was on the road, and I couldn't see shite. The snow made it look like I was in light speed a la Star Trek. The road was just white so I pretty much just strattled the middle the whole time. I made it though. I'd be more worried about the vehicle getting stuck wherever you park it

I did it about 50 times without 4 wheel drive and it got pretty hairy on a few. But we had chains. OP may want to check on the chain law - if it is still a thing then there are times that you don't make the drive without chains. It can snow pretty hard at the Eisenhower Tunnel, even if it's not a problem at a little lower elevation.
