I thought San Juan was one but doesn’t appear to be now.

Cancun, Punta Cana, Panama City, and Miami are the only Latin American direct routes from MSY.

They used to.
MSY also had other Latin American airlines, TACA, Aviateca, and SAHSA back in the day. Most of those merged into Avianca companies.

A lot of it has more to do with % occupancy on the plane.
Most run a "1 connection" flight to maximize the $$$
