Ride up there in the morning, back in the afternoon.

Is it worth it for the amount of driving time / short visit?

Predicting rain on the day to go. Visibility issues?

Thanks!

Only worth a day trip if you are scheduled for one of the tours that venture deep into the park. Those tours are typically 4-6 hours long. If you don't have a tour scheduled, you will have very limited access to the park. Additionally, it's a 4 hour drive to the park no matter what as the highway is 2 lane most of the way and pretty crowded.

It's a pretty drive, but man its a decent drive with some boring parts along the way.

If you want a fun all day drive that's not Denali. Drive from Anchorage to Cantwell then take the Old Denali Hwy to Paxson, then drive back down through Palmer back to Anchorage.

13 hour drive roundtrip if you take your time (and believe me you will because it's a gravel bumpy road most of the way), but the scenery is amazing if you time it right in the Fall there are awesome blueberry picking spots.

We took the train to Denali from Anchorage and stayed a few days. We were lucky to have a clear view of the mountain from very far away because it is obscured much of the time even when the weather is nice. It is so big it creates its own weather system. On a rainy day I would not be too optimistic about seeing it.

If you can swing it, I HIGHLY recommend taking one of the overflight tours - its an amazing experience. We went in May of this year and it was spectacular to see everything from the air.

You would be driving all day. I guess if you stop in Talkeetna and spend a few hours it would be worth it. 4 hours min each way.

then take the Old Denali Hwy to Paxson,

One of my favorites, have only done it once though. Want to do it next year again.

I went the reverse though, Paxson to Cantwell.

Will the road be completely open?

I read there was a landslide that cut half the road off.

That's a good question (I forgot about that), looks like the road is still closed (and will remained closed to Summer of 2023) at Mile 43.

Inside the park, the park road.. Outside, the Denali Hwy is open.

The State Park just south of the NP also has good views of the mountain. You drive through up the Parks Hwy.

The Denali Hwy is a dirt road, except for a small part around Cantwell I believe. Great views when you reach Maclaren Pass. Lots of open tundra, the Maclaren Glacier, Alaska Range.

Did this about 15 years ago. Stayed for a week in Anchorage. Drove out to Denali. We drove until a small town a few mile before the park entrance. It was an all day ride. But worth it. Also spend time in the areas just north of Anchorage, beautiful area along with the Kenai and Whittier south of the city.
