Base/Rome. Plan to just walk around, eat and see outside of some attractions . No tours. Wanted to just stay in Rome but reading how AC is a must see.

So is it worth a day trip or should I just wait until I can spend a night or 2 ?

Can do in one day via train but there is much to see in amalfi. Driving the coast is like the old wild maus ride at pontchartrain beach but with better views

The Amalfi Coast is one of my favorite places but I think I would wait until I could spend a couple of days. A day trip from Rome would be too rushed and you would spend too much time getting there and back, especially if you want to visit more than one town.

Definitely NOT a day trip. It's at least an hour by train (and more likely 1.5 hrs) to Naples, and then you'll need a driver for the additional 1.5 hrs to Amalfi/Posi/any of the other towns. If you can spare two days, it might be a nice bookend to a trip. But it's not worth rushing down there just to rush back.

If you're staying in Rome proper, consider shorter day trips outside the city. Ostia Antica is an archaeological site, the old port of Rome at the mouth of the Tiber, that allows you to walk the streets of the town. It has ruins of a bath with grand mosaic floors, an ampitheater, scores of shops, a bakery, a small museum...and it is easily reached by train from Rome in 45 mins or so.

Another good day trip from Rome is Tarquinia, where you can visit excavated Etruscan tombs (the Etruscans predate the Greeks/Romans on the Italian peninsula). Again, easily reached by train & a short bus into town center, then a 10 minute walk.

Finally, if renting a car, you could visit the Castelli Romani region just south of Rome....the area produces Frascati wines, so there are wineries to visit, as well as the Villa Barberini gardens at Castel Gandalfo (the pope's summer retreat). This area is harder to reach using public transit, though it can be done. Car makes it easier to get to the wineries. If you do visit the Castelli Romani, I can recommend Osteria il Bersaglieri, in Colonna.

You cannot do it in a day using trains. Plan on 3 days. Use most of 1 day to get down there. 2 nights there. 3rd day to get back to Rome with a stop at Pompeii or Herculaneum.
