Really nice, especially in the AM when it's empty. For relaxing for a few days, that area is great. Plenty AirBnB options and restaurant/bars as well.

That area is amazing. Surfed just north of there in Hermosa.
Gaston did you just fly into San Jose and get a rental? Did you bring your own surfboard? My youngest son(21 years old)& I want to do a 4 day trip to go surfing in Hermosa. We have seem some AirBnb's right next to the beach.

Check out the Surf Inn Hermosa as well. I thought about going here based on a YouTube video awhile back, it's just not the vibe were looking for on this trip.

Amazing trip. Me and my wife spent three days in fortuna area and three in papagayo and it was a fantastic time. Ticos are incredible people.

We took a cab from San Jose to Montezuma. We just rented surf boards at each stop, surfed on both sides of the country as well.
Mal Pais is more of a surfing destination than Hermosa…but either would be fun.

Thanks Gaston. I booked an airbnb right off the beach in Hermosa for 4 nights in Mid October. We are flying right out of Orlando straight to San Jose and renting a 4wd subrau to drive around bringing our own boards.

Don’t get stuck in Puntarenas, research when that last ferry runs and absolutely make sure you’re over the bay on it.

Thought I would update on what we decided.
5 days in Costa Rica in February. Flight arrives at 2:32pm. Will get through customs, do the rental car, and spend the evening in San Jose or make some progress towards Saint Theresa.
Booked this AirBNB in February. AirBNB Costa RicaExactly what we are looking for. Quiet. Privacy. Pool. Close to beach. Plan is to cook breakfast and prepare lunch for the road. Go out for dinners/drinks. No hurry to get anywhere.
Early departure and a long travel day to get home, but very excited. Haven't done an International trip with the wife in awhile. Costa Rica was on our list before kids, so happy to be checking it off.

It's very easy to rent a car in Costa Rica. My daughter and I drove quite a lot and never had any problems. Don't rent from a chain. Rent from a local company like Vamos. You do need to get all the insurance, but it still wasn't that pricy for us. There were some roads with really bad potholes, but I've been on just as bad in Louisiana.
Also, for surfing, you might consider Playa Avellanas, south of Tamarindo. I think surfing is better that direction. Looks like they have a surf school and everything you'd need.
You also might check flights into Liberia. It would be a lot closer.
We really felt quite safe in Costa Rica. It's one of the places I've been that I thought I would be able to live there.
