Anyone on this board ever been? Have a job offer there and wondering if it’s worth the move. Money is a good bit better than what I’m making now. Currently living in Nola and in my mid 20’s and never lived out of the state.

I've only driven through and stopped for lunch. Seems very much like Baton Rouge, for whatever that's worth.

The biggest plus to me would seem to be LOCATION. It is basically 2-3 hours in every direction to pretty much everything one could want: beaches, mountains, 2 big NFL cities (hell, I guess you could even count Jacksonville, but nobody really counts Jacksonville), 2-3 SEC schools.

If the job is right and if you have nothing else tying you here, at your age I'd leap at the opportunity.

My brother took a job is Ashville when he was younger and said it was the best experience of his life. It's good to go away. You will either really want to come home or never return. Do it before you are tied down with a family.

I love my family, but I will always wonder how my life would be different if I had taken a job far away right out of college.

Go, you can always come back, but you may never get this opportunity again. Also, Columbia is a cool town. Good Luck kid

What's the worst that could happen?

You get to live somewhere else for a bit, gain experience, and get a pay raise. If you ever want to come back, you have a higher bargaining status for pay and position. Please update when you make a decision.

Columbia, SC is great. Like Baton Rouge but a lot better. Great place for a younger person, too.

I have not lived there in many years, but loved it when I did. I lived in the St Andrews area (I-20 / I 26).

When I lived there, clubs closed at midnight, but had PRIVATE CLUBS that stayed open till 5....not even a membership fee.

I would compare Columbia to Mobile. AL and BR. ..
more towards BR because of the University.
But beautiful area with hills (plenty of place for speed traps) specially Hwy. 277. Get a place w a Fireplace, occasionally it will freeze up for a week and power can fail

A little more spread out in the areas of interest.
A 2:45 min hour drive to Myrtle Beach about 2:00 hrs to Charleston.

Get used to:
Beach Music is not the Beach Boys but more R-B and Carolina coast
USC is not USC Calif but University of So. Carolina
Dancing = Shag
Geaux Cups do not exist.

Spent 8 years in Columbia for undergrad and law school. My brother lives there. It is a great area imo. You are an hour from Charlotte, 3 from Atlanta, 1.5 hours from Greenville, less than 2 from Charleston and about 2 from Myrtle Beach.

If you are interested in football, Gamecock fans are some of the most loyal in the country and Williams-Brice is a shite show most Saturdays. Clemson is about 150 miles away, UGA is a 3 hour ride. You are also close enough to do a Sunday trip to Panthers and Falcons games.

As far as good areas, downtown has come a long way. The areas around USC, Shandon, the Vista and Rosewood are all nice areas. Just outside downtown is Forest Acres, which is its own incorporated town. It is also very nice but more suited for families. If you're talking about suburbs, Northeast Columbia, specifically the Spring Valley area, is very popular.

If you're in your mid-20's, I would highly recommend downtown. The bar and restaurant scenes in the Vista, Main Street and Five Points are all great, but they can be a pain to get to outside that area, specifically because of how spread out the city is. And best of all, the talent in Columbia is spectacular.

Cost of living much cheaper than Nola and lots of things close by. You probably don’t care but they have a great zoo. It would be a good experience to leave and pocket some extra money even if you don’t like it long term. I view it as the BR to Nola’s Charleston but probably more liveable.

Go, take the job. I have not lived there but have been there many times for business.

FYI:
You will be expected to affiliate w/ the Gamecocks or the Clemson Tigers. Doesn’t matter that you have no previous association with either one. You will probably get that question the first day from multiple people.
The bar-b-q is different than probably any you have had.
Vehicle property taxes are high I have been told.
You probably will not find seafood as good as in NO but Charleston has really good restaurants.
There are a lot of historical places in SC if that interest you.
There are a lot of outdoor recreation options in all directions and most within 2 to 3 hours.
It gets hot & humid in the summer but not any worse than LA.

not really...
All my friends knew I was LSU and did not have a problem.
Would likely have more problems associating w Clemson.

Back in the day ... I had to sit in the parking lot of a club called Polo's (top of a hill) to catch games on the NOLA radio.
Waitresses were very nice, would bring me drinks to the car in the parking lot even though the club did not get busy till after 11:30

You lived there and no one asked you which team you favored?

It is good natured, I didn’t mean to imply that it is a problem, but I was asked many times to “pick a side”, especially the week they play. Didn’t matter that my team is LSU.

NOPE, they knew I was LSU and no one asked me to pick a side.
Same when I lived in Mobile AL.

I was not shy about LSU.

I moved to Greenville, SC 6ish months ago. I'm about 1.5 hours from Columbia and I've passed through and stopped 4-5 times. It's pretty similar to BR, but it's surrounding by some really pretty areas. I'd take the offer and run. I miss the boot, but I'm loving life up here. Plus, it was 65 degrees yesterday morning and the hottest it got was 82. Made for a hell of a round of golf! Edit: I'm also mid 20s for what it's worth.
