We're spending a few days in Atlanta this Mother's Day weekend with only the Georgia Ren Faire being penciled in. For excursions out of the city we've typically gone northeast towards the Helen/Tallulah Falls area. I'd like to spend a day going the opposite direction towards Cloudland Canyon. As a first time visitor, what are some recommendations for a day trip? We'll more than likely have my 70something in-laws with us so any long hikes are probably a no go. I'd like to have a late lunch/early dinner in the area, any restaurant recommendations are welcome.

Also, check out Little River Canyon. It's closer and a larger area.

I’ve been once, several years ago. I took the waterfall trail which was very steep and involved a lot of stairs. It looks like the west rim trail may be doable for your group.

I ate somewhere near there and it was fine. Can’t find it on map and wasn’t worth going out of your way regardless.

Seeing the hang gliders go off near there was cool.

The food at the McLemore resort is worth checking out. Beautiful views too

Cloudland Canyon is one of the best State Parks in the Southeast. Miles of hiking trails. Son and I stayed there last month in one of their yurts. Great time.

Hiking

Main Overlook / West Rim Overlook. Paved, short, and right off the parking lot.

Meals

Liked going to Thatcher's BBQ in Trenton, which is about 15 minutes away. Didn't go to Canyon Grill but it is a popular local restaurant as well.

Tours

About 1/2 hour from touring the Chickamauga Battlefield.

Mentone AL is about 30-40 minutes away. Has some cute shops. Nearby Desoto Falls or Desoto State Park. Various trails, some are easy walks.
