This trip was nothing but a long drinking weekend on the beach and by the pool without phones or work. My wife and I took the direct SW flight from HOU to SJD on Thanksgiving morning. We were surprised at how deserted HOU was compared to all of the other times we have flown out of there. We walked right up to a kiosk and after scanning our passports we dropped our bags without any wait. The TSA Pre-Check was completely empty but, as is customary, my bride gets pulled over for the pre-flight boob grope. We boarded a full flight and after 2.5 hours we hit the tarmac in Cabo. We hit he SW open seating jackpot when someone didn't show and that left an empty seat between my wife and I We booked a transport form Grey Line and would do it again in a heartbeat. Nice clean vans with only 2 stops (including a pit stop) on the way from the airport and a straight shot from the hotel. We took the middle seats with a couple beers from the tents outside of the airport.

One of these days I'll learn how to change the date on my Chinese gopro knock off

We stayed at the Riu Palace. The hotel was very clean and they had people cleaning all day. The room was spacious and included a fridge with XX beers, and mini bar with rum, vodka, and tequila. The best part was the AC actually worked and didn't just "Mexico work." We were not expecting 5* dining but he food was good. Not overwhelmingly good but there were few things that I said were not edible. (More on the food later)

This was the view from our balcony

The resort has two large pools. One quiet and one with activities. The pool and beach were never crowded. The drink service was good. After tipping the servers a few times they made sure we didn't go thirsty! The booze didn't seem full strength but it did the job! One thing that was pretty shitty was the first afternoon we decided to get a few drinks at the swim up pool bar we learned it wouldn't be an option. In theory it was highly commendable but in practice it sucked!!

This poor bastard was slinging drinks and chocolate shots to the Walmart fatty crowd all day!

I'm sure there was no piss in that pool but here sure was a bunch of cigs, vapers and vomit from the Texas A&M fan who blew chunks all over the pool while they were making my first drink! Yeah, that's some meaty shite that came through her nose!

No, vomit doesn't cause people to leave the pool bar!
That's the Aggie boyfriend with the bill turnt backwards. He just waited for a report that his gal was OK. Yes, that's a lot of vomit floating in that pool.

We decided not to sit in that piss infested pool all day so we moved to the beach and the normal people pool to drink and relax. They played music and had some entertaining games during the day. The servers on the beach were taking care of the tippers.

These views took up most of the days with cold XXs, margaritas and pina coladas!

We did a Scuba Caribe water taxi excursion from the hotel for only $22. They took us and another couple from the hotel in a van to the marina to meet the water taxi. The water taxi was a glass bottom boat that took us out for about and hour to see El Archo, the seal lions and some fish in the glass bottom boat. The boat driver was entertaining and pointed out stuff as we went along. We were brought back to the marina and we had an hour (or more if you requested it) to see the sights around the marina. We ended up leaving at 10am and returning at 3:30pm. It was the best deal that was offered from the hotel. Taxis to the marina are $14 each way without the water taxi.

The Marina and the old cannery

We walked the marina and bar hopped after the water taxi. They have a bunch of restaurants and shops as well as a hoard of timeshare sharks. It's just a few blocks away to Cabo Wabo, Gigglin Marlin and other well known tourist spots.

We also hit up Tacos Guss for lunch and a couple beers before hitting more T-shirt shops. The tacos were good. They were pushing out a lot that afternoon.

Beef Tacos. Forgot to take pics of the other stuff.

The usual Mexican stores with persistent salesmen.

As mentioned above, we spent most of the days on the beach with a cold drink relaxing. There are vendors just outside the rope selling their wares and occasionally calling out to you to look at their stuff. They were not bothersome. They also have vendors on site selling tours and excursions. We never had any issues getting chairs on the beach or at the pool. They also have a bar nearby so you never had to go far when the server wasn't nearby.

These guys were grilling everyday by the pool. They grilled burgers, dogs, half chickens and flank steak. They would chop the steak up for your nachos. It always smelled good at the pool. The chicken and steak were really good. The burgers were just OK.

There were a lot of bees in the area. I guess it was because of all of the flowering plants and sweet drinks like the ones we were drinking.

Like I mentioned before, it was not all 5 star dining but it was good. We knew we weren't going on a culinary tour so our expectations were not high. We never went hungry. They have a 24 hour bar snack area that served nachos, sandwiches, pastries in the morning and of course beer, wine and liquor.

The first night we hit the buffet because we didn't pay attention to time and most of the restaurants were booked or there was a long wait. That was perfectly fine because they had grilled lobster and shrimp scampi as well as several other options. I waited until they put out some fresh off the grill and they were really good. The waiters checked on you repeatedly and would bring your drinks including bottles of wine, beer and mixed drinks.

They always had a nightly Mexican station with fresh tortillas and a variety of meats. It was always good.

We hit the steakhouse one night and it was just OK. The steak was tough and flavorless. The wines they serve are all Chilean and most of them are harsh. We hit the Japanese restaurant and enjoyed it. They bring you a sushi appetizer and you select another app, a main and desert. The filet and ramen was good but the chicken skewer was flavorless and not good at all.

We went to the other restaurant called Krystal. It was described as "fusion cuisine." They offer you a glass of sparkling wine when you walk in and then bring a bottle of wine when you order drinks. They bring a plate of apps with fois gras, salmon and cream cheese square. We had the spicy shrimp and mango salad and a shitake mushroom filet and lobster risotto.

Most of the dinner pics are out of focus but you can see why by the number drinks in front of me. That's what out table looked like every night

The breakfasts were always good. They had an omelet station and other stations putting out eggs, pancakes and waffles, as well as mexican breakfast items, fresh fruit and pastries. These meals were welcomed after late nigh drinking. They also have mimosas, bloody marys and other adult breakfast drinks.

Overall, this place was what we were looking for. The pools and beach were really nice and the drinks were plentiful. It is a big place and we never felt crowded. The buffet area was large and they always had stuff that you could satisfy your cravings. It was bland by Louisiana standards but it was OK. There were some things that I would not even try. They had some meats like sausages that were oddly colored like they weren't properly cooked and fish that appeared to stay out too long or not cool enough. We passed where those items.
The resort was clean! there was always someone cleaning, the room was always cleaned and restocked with Pepsi products and beer.

They have a sister property called the Santa Fe that you are allowed to use the facilities and eat at the restaurants. The Santa Fe patrons can't come over to the Palace. We caught the tail end of the neon pool party one night. They got heir money's worth that night and they were carrying, pulling and hauling drunks out. Here are a few of the pics I can post that won't get me banned

Damn I'm craving a trip like that with the wife. It's been way too long since we've gotten away alone.

Pics look great so far, except for those trashy folks.

Tacos Guss is THE ONE place everyone must have a meal at while in Cabo. There is a very very small store across the street that sells local beer for one dollar. Go get some and bring it back across the street to enjoy with your tacos

Where exactly across the street? Can you point it out?

LOL. Right after we ate I asked the ladies selling stuff on the corner where I could get anther beer and they pointed me to that place. I bought $1 beers and some messican chicklets for my kids.

Guss' has beers but I didn't know they let you bring some in. Good to know.

There's a pharmacy directly across the street from Tacos Guss that will sell you anything in that store, no questions asked, if you pay with cash.

....at least so I've heard.

For someone who hasn’t been to Mexico:

How far is it from the airport to the resorts?

I’m guessing there’s no risk of your van being jacked and me being beheaded?

Walking around town is fairly safe?

It really depends on where you go and Mexico. The media talks of a Mexico like it’s one small town we’re crime is rampant and all tourists from America should avoid. Crime gets reported just like a suburb of Houston, if somebody gets shot in a suburb of Houston it’s technically in Houston but not where anybody would normally go.

Airports are different distances from your destinations so it depends on where you’d like to go, the Cancun airport is in the middle of Cancun so it’s a very short taxi ride to your hotel depending on where your staying. We go to Cabo a couple of times a year and it’s about a 40 minute drive to where we stay

I meant specifically Cabo. I figure it’s a little “nicer” than Cancun

I have never felt unsafe in Cabo ever, and I have had some very late nights walking around town. Just like any other major city in the US, there are streets you don’t go down and areas of town to avoid....And from as much time as I have spent in Cabo, those dodgy Streets and “bad” areas of town are very hard to find
