Boston and Maine early October

Looking at a trip to Boston for about 4 days and then four days in Maine. Arriving late on Thursday and staying until following Saturday. 29th thru 8th

Questions:
What area to stay in Boston?
Must do items. (Freedom trail, Constitution, cheers, Red Sox)

Where to stay in Maine? Portland? Bangor? Bar harbor?
Want to see some scenery.
What else besides lobster?

This. However we were there last October 2nd week and the local places were closed for the season. For example The Lobster Shack by the lighthouse was closed.

Have you looked at $ for this trip? I recently had a similar trip planned in early October and scouted a great route.

Prices are ridiculous. We canceled. We had Under Canvas booked in Acadia. Fly into Portland and visit Acadia NP before a road trip to see fall foliage. Fly out of Boston.

Hotels averaged $200+ a night (not including $500 a night at UC) and flights were more expensive than our recent trip to Paris. Rental car was north of $600 and that didn’t include gas of course.

If price isn’t an issue, I’ll share my itinerary. 10 days and hitting all of NE. Only difference is we had 0 days in Boston. Simply an airport to fly back to Houston.

It’s peak season. High demand bc now people in that region can travel. And they starved for travel. Gas prices, low staff, etc.

Flights are still reasonable right now. As low as $330/pp in and out of Boston. I know the hotels are expensive and may try the Air BNB route to save a little. Rental car on points.

This area has been on my wish list for a while and want to do during that time of year. Would love to hear about your itinerary.

I’d stay in Portland—specifically the Portland harbor hotel

Definitely not bar harbor

New England road trip

I used this as a guide. Trimmed off a good bit. But great starting spot for input.

I’ll send my itinerary when I find it. It was condensed into 10 days. About 22 hours of driving total. Fly into Portland and out of Boston.

Again, I never made this trip so can’t comment on the execution. Hope this helps.
