II wanted some recommendations for food and activities for this weekend. The wife and I are driving up there for a long weekend and celebrating our 1st anniversary. Doesn't seem there are many options for fine dining on Monday, which is our anniversary. Also looking for some good hiking spots with views and cool things to check out during the day.

This is critical.

Absolutely

Let's guess. I'll say he's staying at the Sheraton downtown.

I haven't been downtown in a while. We hit up Back Forty a couple of months ago and it was packed. I've heard the restaurants have been hit bad down there. Have you been?

I'm boycotting downtown until they lift the restrictions there. They cancelled the Mercedes Marathon for frick's sake.

I grew up right up the mountain from there. We used to deer hunt all over that property. Hard to believe what all they've done with it.

Hiking: Moss Rock Preserve is very close to you. Also close is Red Mountain Park. Plenty of hiking to be done at either location. Red Mountain Park probably has the better views since you're from LA and don't have any hills there. While not technically a hike, Lover's Leap, Bluff Park, AL, is on the mountain overlooking where you are staying. Fantastic views of the valley and all the developments down there.

Eating? Depends on what you want.

We're pretty open to any kind of food as long as it's good. Fine dining one or two nights. We'll probably get sushi one night as well. A good brunch spot or two.

fine dining on Monday

Yeah. Monday will be tough. Try: Gian Marcos in Homewood. Fine dining Italian. Reservation only since the COVID. It's very good and close to where you are.

Like I said, I haven't been downtown in a while. The places I'd normally recommend down there, I'm not sure about.

I go downtown for work but that's about it lately. Have not been to back forty yet.

Aubie nailed the outdoors.

Food wise, if you want fine dining, look up Perry's Steakhouse. It's right off 459 on Highway 280. Relatively close by and easy to get to. You will need reservations.

I love bham, lived there for 4 years. For hiking, the best and most picturesque will be Oak Mountain State Park. $5 to get in (I think). Check out the "Kings Chair Loop", my favorite hike out there with a great view at the top

If you like beer (really who doesn't?), then you must go to TrimTab brewery. They come out with small batches pretty much weekly, and their seasonal selection is the best I've ever seen. Right now you have got to try their brew called "Holiday Now". It's absolutely fantastic.

Dining has unlimited options. I'll just list some of my favorites: Ovenbird, Highlands, Automatic Seafood, Fancy's on 5th (best burger in town)

My favorite restaurant, and I believe it's even open on Monday's, is Gianmarcos. You MUST sit in the back at the wine bar (call for reservations and say you want the wine bar). Much cheaper and better atmosphere back there. You pay for the wine by the actual price on the bottle, not marked up like it is in the restaurant. I just ate there a couple weeks ago and although the vibe is not quite the same because of covid, the food is still fantastic and the wine selection and service is top notch.

I second Gian Marcos. It's awesome. Good prices too. Again, reservations

Drive over to Big Bad Breakfast on 280 or there's a First Watch in Hoover.

good brunch spot

My wife and I are big brunch fans especially on Sunday. Our current favorite is Troup's Pizza in Cahaba Heights. They serve a variety of breakfast pizzas that are off the charts. They do beignets out of pizza dough which are good.

This is the artichoke/spinach breakfast pizza. I get Conecuh sausage added to it.

For a more urban/downtown feel, you can try the Original Pancake House in Southside/5pts. Beware the homeless and street urchins.

The Birmingham food scene has improved drastically over the past 10 years. I’m more downtown than Chiz and Aubie so my list is downtown heavy. They nailed the ones outside of downtown IMO. The pork chop at Perry’s lives up to the hype.

Ross Bridge rests between Red Mountain and Shades Mountain in what is called Shades Valley.

In the 70's, Birmingham experienced white flight out of Fairfield, Ensley, and West End. Most of those blue collar folks ended up in the Hoover area and Bluff Park specifically which is at the crest of Shades Mountain looking down on where they used to live.

I said the same thing bro. Trust me on this one. Go over there one Sunday and get either the chorizo and scrambled egg pizza or the sausage, bacon, and egg pizza. It will change your life.

Nailed what I would have said pre-COVID. Have you been to these places recently AA7? We went to Blueprint post COVID and it was just OK. Not sure what the deal was, but it was definitely not as good as it was before.
