Trying for Labor Day-ish. We'll see if it works.

Tentatively planning to stay at the Fairmonts, but interested in any alternatives. The hotels look fairly meh throughout the area otherwise. I'm sure they're great for ski season but most look pretty dull for a summer stay. I've checked out cabins/AirBNB but nothing has blown me away so far and it's just the two of us.

Planning to make it photo-centric, so any guidance on that front would be great. Would like to do some casual hiking but probably nothing too adventurous. Will probably consider getting a guide for exploring in hopes of getting off the beaten path a bit (within our limited capabilities) and because the wife is nervous about brown bears - so let me know if anyone has done that with good results.

Thanks!

We are/were planning a similar late summer trip.

Not sure the wife is gonna be on board since we had to cancel our May plans in the Dominican. She'll probably throw a fit to go there instead.

Thank you

Was looking at Canmore as a possible stopover so that looks promising.

I think we got up at like 3:30 to do Cadillac Mountain in Acadia so it sounds like that might be the way to do Moraine as well. I assume staying on the lake would make that area easier for early starts?

Thanks again.

Did you see the pics and descriptions before my response got whacked?

I can send you the thread but the images are now links instead of being embedded

Jasper is in the +150°F club

Record High is 98°F, Record Low is -53°F

(NOLA is not even close, 10.9°F to 102°F)

That’s beautiful country, pack layers, even I got cold in Banff in August. (I didn’t admit it)

Those mountain lakes are stunning to visit.

Peyto Lake is closed for the year for improvements, so you can go ahead and take that lake off your list. I’m guessing the majority of facilities will be somewhat limited with the whole virus situation, even into late summer. We shall see.

I strayed at Fairmont Banff Springs. It’s nice because it’s walkable to downtown, but you aren’t missing anything by staying elsewhere. Exterior looks cool but the rooms are meh and the views are so so.

If I did it again I’d stay at the Fairmont Lake Louise. Nicer property, way better views, easier drive to the icefield parkway and moraine lake

We had both booked (originally planned this for Memorial Day), so trying to decide if still want to go that route (couple nights at each). We might end up doing a tour of all 3 (including Jasper), but the LL one looks like it'll be the most useful/nicest.

Good info about Peyto. Yeah, who knows how things will turn out but so far everything is refundable so we'll give it a go.

Hope your wife doesn’t read this.

I’ve stayed there, nice hotel.

Ask for a room in the Main hotel building, the rooms in the additions can be a fur piece away from the lobby.

I prefer Banff town over Jasper, the scenery is wonderful at either.

You are correct, we got stuck in the property closest to the main hotel. It was literally across the street, but it was a little outdated

Our tourism has died here. Every hotel and short term rental agency has been told to not take reservations until further notice. I’ve got friends in the tourism industry here and have stated that over $10 million dollars in reservations through the year have been cancelled already.

I've been to the area 4 times since 2008. Like it so much I keep going back.

I've never been as far up as Jasper because I keep finding things to do around Banff/Lake Louise.

I typically stay in Banff but stayed away from downtown last trip (becoming too touristy).

Canmore can be done in a couple of days but it's a beautiful town.

Lake Louise has become overrun with tour buses, just a nightmare to navigate.

I tend to like day hikes, quietness, lakes, and not the hustle and bustle.

I would think this year will be less touristy because of the travel situation.

Good Luck, you can't go wrong. Scenery is amazing!
