I'll be looking forward to your review. We're also planning our honeymoon and have looked into the Caribbean, Belize and Costa Rica. Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines are all on my bucket list, so we're considering these for a honeymoon also.

Did a search last night, and there are a lot of nice resorts in Bali for not too much. And im sure food and everything else is cheap. Where are you staying when you go?

Also, is it common or worth it to stay at a beach location for a few days then somewhere more inland for a few days? I was looking at doing this if going to Belize or Costa Rica

I'll have all this in the final review, but I can briefly answer your questions while I'm having my morning coffee.

One of the reasons we chose Bali is because we wanted somewhere that we could go for at least a couple weeks that wouldn't cost a small fortune. We figured that if we were going to fly all this way, it didn't make sense to only stay a week. There are some really reasonable costs for places to stay here - we are actually staying in private villas everywhere we go, which is something we couldn't have done if we went to South Africa (our original choice for the honeymoon).

We are hopping all over the island. Again, in the final review I'll have a map to show where we were, but if you'd like to look it up yourself, we have been/are going to Tabanan, then the West Bali National Park, Ubud (currently here), and Nusa Dua. Basically all over the island. We've done everything from in the city, to in the jungle, to right on the beach.

We were able to book round trip for $800 to Bangkok from Houston. Another $400 roundtrip from Bankgok to Bali so all in about $1200/person. There was a huge sale earlier this year to Southeast Asia on United

I feel like we got a deal of a lifetime on our roundtrip flight to south Asia. Me and my fiancée are flying to the Maldives for our honeymoon at the end of the month. Our roundtrip airfare was only $850/person. $1700 total to fly from New Orleans to D.C. to Doha to Male and back on Southwest Airlines/Qatar Airways. I'm expecting very different service between these flights

I'll have four weeks of vacation but my fiancé has only two I think. So we won't be able to do an long honeymoon.

I'm thinking 4 nights in Nusa Dua and 4 in Udub would allow us to see and experience a lot while also saving time to just relax and be with each other

I think that would be sufficient time to see a lot of what Bali has to offer. Haven't been to Nusa Dua yet, as that is our final stop of this trip, but I'll let you know how it is there. Ubud is pretty nice - going to explore the city a little more today. It was pretty rainy yesterday so we just relaxed at our suite for the most part.

I will say, it took us about 30 hours total to get to Bali, so just make sure you have enough time here to make 60 hours of RT travel worth it.

I just landed back in the US yesterday and was busy unpacking and trying to get myself on a regular sleep schedule.

Back in the office today. I promise I will start working on my review this week and sharing it piece by piece with everyone.

Apologies in advance for how long the review will be - have a lot of material to cover.

Just got back from our trip - We flew All Nippon Airways (ANA) from Houston to Bangkok which was really nice. We flew AirAsia from Bangkok to Bali and back and that was terrible. AirAsia is the Spirit Airlines equivalent over there

First, let me apologize for the delay in posting all this. Getting home and catching up on work as well as getting back on a normal sleep schedule took more of a toll than I anticipated.

Because it was over two weeks of travel, I am going to break the review down by destination rather than by day. We went to four different parts of the island: Tabanan, Menjangan, Ubud, and Nusa Dua.

Day 1: Travel

We flew Southwest from NOLA to Houston, then Houston to LAX. From there, we took China Airlines from LAX to the Taiwan International Airport, and from Taiwan into Bali. As I mentioned in the OP, flying business class on an international flight has now spoiled me forever. The seats are essentially their own pods, the food they serve is actually really good, the service is amazing (I lost count of how many drinks I had), and the seats lay down all the way to become beds. Also, during our layover in Taiwan, we had access to the lounge, which allowed us to eat and drink for free, as well as take a shower to freshen up after a long day of traveling. All in all, it was just over 30 hours of traveling. Here’s a picture of our seats as well as the food menu for the flight:

Days 2 - 3: Tabanan

We had a car from the resort pick us up from the airport, and along the route we passed by a religious procession through the streets. This was a really cool way to start the trip and see a bit of authentic Balinese culture. They were processing from the beach (pictured later) to one of the village temples, and were extremely friendly and more than happy for us to take photos of them as they passed our car. We also got some great videos of them smiling and waving as they walked by.

After the procession passed, we continued the drive through endless rice paddies (below) and eventually checked into our villa. We stayed at a newer resort called Soori – I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The rooms were incredible and the service was amazing - we splurged on a villa with a great view of the black sand beaches. I had never seen black sand before, and unfortunately the pictures I post do not do it justice. It was also pretty great having a pool that our room literally opened up to. After a long day and a half of travel, we were exhausted, so we just got a massage at the spa and had dinner in the villa. Here are some shots of our room, our view, and the property.

Private cabana and pool:

The next day, we had breakfast brought to our cabana:

After breakfast, we met with the executive chef on the property and did a culinary class. He brought us into the village (about 10 minutes away) and walked us through the local market, showing us all the local fruits and vegetables, as well as other items for sale.

From there, we went back to the resort with our groceries and began the cooking class at one of the restaurant kitchens on the property. It was really interesting because we made a lot of local dishes that I’ve never attempted, using a lot of spices and ingredients that are very foreign to me. They even gave us the recipes for everything we cooked to bring home, and were great about explaining substitutions for ingredients that are hard to find in the U.S. We then sat outside and enjoyed the fruits of our labor for lunch.

The afternoon was comprised of a lot of hanging out at our pool and enjoying drinks, as well as walking along the beach. View from our cabana:

About two minutes away from our room, there is a small cave where hundreds of fruit bats were sleeping, so I (quietly) walked into the cave and got a shot of that:

That night, we went out and enjoyed cocktails during sunset and listened to a couple locals play the Xylo, and had an incredible dinner of BBQed chicken and beef, then a crispy duck that was easily the best cooked duck I’ve ever had.

This chicken was actually served on a tiny charcoal grill. So that it was still cooking when they served it to you:

Days 4 – 6: Menjangan

After having breakfast on our cabana, we checked out of Soori and had a driver take us 3 hours to our next destination: The Menjangan inside the West Bali National Park. For anyone who enjoys national parks, this place is ranked as one of the Top 100 nature reserves to visit in the world. This was a contrast from Soori, in that it was a bit more rustic and didn’t have as much of a luxury resort feel, though it was still very nice. Here are some shots of our room and views, as well as of the deer and monkeys that would roam around within feet of our room (they seemed completely un-phased by the presence of people).

This was our outdoor shower, pre-monkey and post-monkey.

Later, we had a private candlelight 8-course Balinese tasting menu dinner set up for us on a secluded jetty. Here’s a shot of the setup as well as some of the food:

The next day, we took a boat out to Menjangan island to snorkel. Here are some pictures from the boat, including one of a temple on the Cliffside:

That night, we had drinks and then dinner on the top of the main tower, which allowed for outstanding views of the entire Park:

Here are just some random shots from the property:

More to follow. Still working on the reviews from the rest of the trip.

Dude, that is beautiful and awesome. Wow. You just made me want to go to Bali ASAP.

I especially love the market and cooking classes. How freaking incredible.

That temple with the big Ganesha is gorgeous. I have a Hindu deity statue obsession. I'd have definitely had to buy some while there.

Thanks.

This covers the first half of the trip. I'm going to update the last half in a day or two and there will be some great shots of temples that are over 1,000 years old.

If you have any interest in going to Bali all I can say is you absolutely should.
