I’m going to end up in Mobile around 2pm, and I was thinking it would be best to avoid their tunnel completely by taking I-65 North, then taking State Hwy 59 south back to I-10 around Loxley. Do you believe this would be worth the detour? Even if it ends up being the same time I spent in traffic after the tunnel, worth it.

Take the old Tunnel if 1-10 is backed up.

I’ve gone around it before in the past, and it’s pretty worthwhile, especially if the tunnel is really backed up.

I've gotten off the interstate and used the old tunnel. Saved some time.

If headed east, I just stick to the farthest right lanes I can and get over last minute. Works every time.

Is this just a weekend traffic situation we're talking about?

I’m heading to Destin tomorrow, so it’s a Monday 2pm situation.

Weekends are the worst times, with families traveling to and from Orange Beach and Destin. It might not be too bad on a weekday. We stayed a few extra days in Destin this year and returned on a Wednesday with no real traffic issues at the tunnel.

It isn't the tunnel that is backed up, it is the clusterfrick on the east side where not only both the tunnel traffic merges but also the bay bridge. You just gotta sit it out baw.

Waze it. I have been burned by the tunnel a few times so I just naturally go the Old Spanish Trail Route now. But if you are considering chancing it, then make sure you have your Waze app on as you are approaching.

I took I-65 North, then caught State Hwy 59 to I-10. Worked out real well.

ETA: Driving through Baton Rouge at noon was fine. The I-10 Westbound just west of Gulfport was packed with traffic. I’ll have to re-adjust when I head back.

I think when I hit Mobile on the trip back, it should be around 7am, so I should be fine. And whoever said it isn’t the tunnel, but the clusterfrick to the east of the tunnel on that bridge, you are exactly right. I ran into that last year.

Mobile and it’s east bridge and tunnel were completely fine, I ended up hitting it later around 9am on a Wednesday.

The Gulfport New Buccees traffic was 14 minutes of slowness before I started going regular speed again so it wasn’t as bad as I expected. We hit that at about 10:30am (again, Wednesday).

Everything else was good until I got into Houston. I usually take the Beltway 8 South to get around it, but a portion was completely blocked off to the point where you’d have to exit the toll road, so I ended up taking I-10 all the way to US 59 South, which sucked but only added about an hour to my trip so not as bad as I originally thought.

There was slow and go traffic right before the San Jacinto in Channelview which probably added another 15 minutes.

Just came back from Florida yesterday. Zero traffic at the Mobile tunnel, some traffic at the Bucee's construction area at the Menge Blvd exit near Biloxi.

The Mobile Tunnel is a real thing, but is not worth all the worry and definitely not worth the going North to 59 deal.

For the most part there are 2-3 main flows of traffic.

Non-Summer

If you are East Bound i.e. heading to Florida then you want to plan on delays of around 20-25 minutes to go about 1.5 miles and through the tunnel M-F between 4-6pm.

If you are West Bound then look for heavy traffic from 7am-9am M-F.

This is caused by people that work in Mobile but live in Baldwin County. Coming to work in the morning and leaving in the afternoon.

Summertime...Good luck expect about 45 minute delays pretty much both ways. With heavier traffic going East on Fridays and Saturdays and coming back on Sundays and Mondays.

Plus you still have work traffic in there everyone but teachers.
