Going to Asia in May and we're trying to decide on our final stop of the trip.

My gf and I have both wanted to see Burma, especially Bagan and the "City of temples", which houses this incredible scene that we've been wanting to see for quite some time:

We have a few things of concern though, mainly being the recent acts of what basically boils down to ethnic cleansing. That's mainly in the North though, which we will undoubtedly avoid.

Another concern of mine is food options. Burma is still very undeveloped, and hasn't been influxed with tourists like many other SE Asian countries. I'm a little nervous about finding clean food.

Wondering if anyone here has traveled there, or have plans to do so?

TIA

Myanmar has been a mess for decades. The Buddhists are currently purging/murdering/burning out the “ stateless “ Muslims. Ugly business. Beyond that, the government is bad, bad news but there is nothing new about that. I was going to go to Myeik for two days in November but changed my mind because I got sick so I stayed in Thailand.

All that said, I see no reason why it would be unsafe for you. As long as you aren’t in those specific areas although from what I hear the government has it on lockdown there. As far as food, it doesn’t matter where you travel in SE Asia , you are likely to get the squirts at some point. Saigon stomach, Bangkok Belly, Phnom Penh puke, etc. It happens. At least it happens to me.

Go and do a great trip report.

Yeah, last year was in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand and had no big problems with the food outside of mild stomach issues. We're pretty adventurous with our palletes.

That being said, I don't think Burma has been influxed with tourism as much as those other countries, so they may have much more limited options

I was on my way in October but my travel companion got a rare brain infection that made me cancel the trip.

Real bummer. I'm unlikely to be able to make it there for quite some time now.

So yes, I'd go. Nothing I read made it seem more dangerous for tourists than places I've been previously.

Yeah I'm seeing the same. I'd say we're about 90% a yes. Philippines is prob the other option, but I just don't see another time I'd go to Burma.

Yes I went back in 2012. It was amazing and one of my favorite places I visited on my 4 month trip of se Asia. I went to Yangon, bagan, and inle lake. Not sure what it's like now but I never felt unsafe while I was there. Finding food was never an issue there, no different than any other city in se Asia. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I also just got back from the Philippines and its awesome too. Can't go wrong with either.

Awesome, I'm gonna have quite a few!

Firstly, which city did you fly into? Mandalay?

I flew from Bangkok to Yangon. Back then you could only fly from Bangkok or Chang mai to Yangon.

Ah, gotcha.

How did you get to to Bagan? That's a hike from Yangon.

Also what did you do and where did you stay in Bagan? That'll prob be our main stop after Mandalay.

We're most likely doing the balloon ride over the city of temples. It's kind of expensive but that scene looks too amazing to pass up and it's been on our bucket list.

We flew from Bangkok to Mandalay, stayed there for about 3 days, then took the $40 boat to Bagan. It leaves around 7 a.m. and gets to Bagan at around 5 p.m. It was wonderful, like travelling in 1930 or something. You can get wine on the boat and just watch the villages and temples go by. I hung around the bridge until the captain invited me in and sat with them drinking tea and eating peanuts for a couple of hours (too bad we couldn't talk with one another).

In (New) Bagan we stayed at the Kumudara Hotel Temple View for around $50 per night. $10 taxi ride from the boat landing. Great service, location, and food. The first morning we woke up to the balloons landing just behind the swimming pool.

What to do? We rented scooters and explored the area (not much traffic), took a day trip to some big temple about an hour away, did a lot of walking, and we did the balloon ride. Then it was $300 per person, but you only live once, right? Breathtaking scenery, professional pilots, and they pick you up in an old English bus from around 1950. You can book the balloon ride from the hotel, or maybe there's direct booking online - Balloons Over Bagan.

Oh, and if you fly Air Asia into Mandalay, there is a free bus shuttle (also an English antique bus) from the airport into town. When you exit the bus, the Mother's World Hotel is only about 150 yards away. Very cool hotel (probably the coolest we stayed at) for around $20 for a double. Good location and breakfast; service was great, but again, we couldn't communicate with the staff very well, not that it mattered much.

I flew from Yangon to bagan. I don't remember where I stayed, I was a poor backpacker at the time so it was probably a really cheap guesthouse. I toured the temples for a couple days and rented bikes another day. Unfortunately I didn't do the hot airbaloons because it was too expensive.

Damnit, after looking at the balloon rides over Bagan, they don't run in May or June.

That puts a big damper on our wanting to go as that was the main thing we wanted to do. Also seems like most of the temples are closed off. Getting that epic view of the landscape appears like it's gonna be harder than initially thought, or not possible at all.

Seriously leaning Philippines now.

Philippines is awesome too. I just went to palawan in November. Went to coron, el nido, and noa noa island. Noa noa island was one of the best places I've ever stayed. It's kind of pricey but it's worth every penny if you can stay there 2 or 3 nights.
