It's not that far of a drive (8 hours straight), so you could mix it up with some other stops. We'd like to visit Krka National Park Waterfalls in Croatia for example. Could base in cities like Split and get tours to Bosnia.
It was a pretty easy drive, we didn't have any problems with the border crossings. I think you would thoroughly enjoy the road trip and making a few stops in Croatia along the way. I'd hit Zadar if you can, doesn't look like it would be far off of your route. Catch a sunset dinner along the water's edge for an amazing view.
Split was great also but small, doesn't take much to see all of it.

Did Dubrovnik-Kotor-Mostar-Dubrovnik with a rental car 2 yrs ago. Had read plenty of horror stories about border crossings, but we had no issues at all. I think that's mostly a heavy summer tourism issue in the area. The drive from Kotor to Mostar was really cool, though pretty remote at times. Funny enough though, we had better cell service in rural Bosnia than here at home. Mostar was really cool, but small. The bridge/river and surrounding buildings are post card like.
We also made stops to hike up Apporition Hill and also to see the Kravice Waterfalls. Both very much worth the detours.

Thanks! Any suggestions on where to visit? I assume not many Americans go.
I went courtesy of Uncle Sam for a year. I think southern Bosnia will likely be more touristy. I heard great things about Sarajevo, Mostar, and Medjugorje.
My guess is the area I was in NE around Tuzla is still pretty rural and not very touristy. If you do go, please stop at one of the countryside cafes that cooks lamb on a spit out front of the restaurant. I always wanted to try one. Hopefully one day I'll get an opportunity to back and try it myself!

UPDATE
Hi. We think we're going to go and am starting the active planning.
Wife (no pics) thought we should just fly from Venice to Sarajevo, versus driving, and do day trips from there? Not sure about that.
Have found a great local tour company Funky Tours.
Any additional thoughts? Thanks! Thanks!

We did Germany through Albania to N. Macedonia and went back through Bosnia. The car thing, as far as I heard, only applied to Kosovo. We had no problem getting in or out of Bosnia.

Thanks. How long were you in Bosnia? I'm wondering if just basing in Sarajevo, possible day trip to Mostar, gives me enough exposure to the country vs. some other parts?

Unfortunately we were just driving through on our way back, but I will return. It's an easy drive through Slovenia and Croatia from where I live in southeastern Bavaria. Our trip was mostly concentrated on Albania, but I really want to spend time in Bosnia and Kosovo to try and wrap my mind around all the shite that went down in the 90's. From what I've gathered, they love Americans there. I had coworkers from Kosovo and they said it's really the wild west there; you have to have supplemental car insurance to cross the border. The entire region is extremely beautiful and can be pretty rugged, and Bosnia seemed to be the most inexpensive place we stopped in.
