Been watching some travel videos and the areas in the High Tatra Mountains looks particularly appealing.

Going to Bratislava for a day or so in November. Wish I had more time to get out in the mountain areas.

I know. Wife's been to Bratislava and didn't think much of it frankly. Good article.

We started watching some videos on other parts of the country last night and OMG, never knew.

These were pretty good...

Video 1

Video 2

Thing I noticed is yes, they stayed in one of the most expensive places in the country probably at around $220/night... OMG!

But..

A quick search on other inns, small hotels routinely found top rated properties for $30 -$100/night. Straight up. Options.

It's really peaked our interest now.

Yes. Bratislava and the surrounding countryside. It wasn't all that impressive IIRC. The fact that I don't remember much about it is telling.

I thought it was charming and relaxed but if you’re crossing the Atlantic, better to tack it onto another destination like Vienna or Budapest

If you want to experience the Tatras, you can also visit them from the Polish side. Look into the Zakopane / Morskie Oko area. It's where the Poles go for skiing/hiking and is supposed to be nice. I think I would rather base a trip like this out of Krakow rather than Bratislava. But maybe Krakow just seems more interesting to me. Never been to either but Poland is on my list.

Yes, technically. We were in Poland with a group this summer and spent 2 or 3 nights in Zakopane which is very near the Slovakia border. One of our planned events was rained out so we drove to the border and walked into Slovakia.

Below is a link to my Poland trip report and if you scroll down to the 5th page there is information about Zakopane and the high Tatras.

Out trip leader is from Poland and a skier. He says the slopes in Zakopane tend to be Double Black Diamond or bunny trails; not much in between and he said a lot of people go to Slovakia to ski for a better variety. I'm not a skier so I don't know.

The cost of the Poland trip was low and we stayed in very nice hotels. Poland is not on the Euro.

Below are some pictures that are not in the trip review. (Oops, looked at the trip report again & some of these pictures are included.)

We had dinner in this place one night and a folk group entertained us.

Interior of the restaurant.

Entertainment; they played music, sang and danced. Some of the audience also danced with them.
[/img]

They turned down the lights and set a ham on fire for dramatic effect.
[/img]

The ham was very good.
[/img]

Most of us did not like this; that's pure lard with bacon bits in it. We had that twice in Z.

Thought this was interesting. Back in the day; before the USSR broke up and the EU was created, this was the border crossing check point. Now you just walk across the border.
