I’m thinking about going, but I’ve heard it’s risky early in the season.

Really risky - I wouldn’t chance it. You could be fine. You could also be hiking.

I’m familiar with the mountain, and it is not uncommon for there to be little to no snow through January.

Whistler is a March mountain.

That’s what I’ve been reading. Thanks.

Any good options that early?

I've gone the past two winters to Jackson Hole and Breckenridge in early december with a friend in med school, only time he can get time off. We booked maybe a few weeks in advance once we knew where the skiing was going to be good. You can get some great deals on airfare and lodging as it's all before the holiday rush

How was the snow? Most of the trails open?

Snow was excellent both times. About 95% of the runs were open in both locations, theres definitely a benefit in waiting to book to see where has the most snow a few weeks before.

Summit County in Colorado is your best bet. 5 or 6 resorts in a 30 mile radius. High base elevation, lots of snowmaking equipment. I’d recommend staying in Frisco and commuting to whichever mountain has the best conditions. Free Shuttle to all the Summit resorts

Yeah.... I’m not booking early unless I can cancel for free relatively close to the dates I choose

Thanks....I went to Breckenridge in March and I really wouldn’t have a problem going back. It was my first time snowboarding and I only had time for a weekend trip. I saw they got a bunch of snow in October last year and I’m hoping it happens again. I’m itching to get back on the slopes and I’d rather not have to wait.

You could have issues anywhere in December. Just have to watch the snow tracks in November.

I'm betting an early season in the Rockies and a late season in the NW

If that’s your reasoning, just wait until mid January and you can go pretty much anywhere you want. It will be worth the wait.

Only time I went to Whistler was second week of January. The snow was perfect and everything was open. Early December is risky.

Early season you want Utah, Montana, or Wyoming. Jackson hole and most places are almost dead early season especially if you can go during the week and most will be weekend trips or locals. You can get some fantastic deals up until about the 20th when the Christmas people start arriving. Jackson hole has had tons of snow the past 5-6+ years. Same with the other Montana and Wyoming places as far as I remember.

Airfare will be considerably more if you wait last minute. I’m not sure on hotel deals but I’d look to book about 6-8 weeks off when airfare is still reasonable.

I go to Lake Louise most years about the 2nd week of December and it's always been decent to great. They typically hold a professional downhill event a week or 2 before we go.

It’s a flight into Calgary and about a 3 hour easy drive from there. The rates at the Fairmont Lake Louise in early December are great.

I've skied Whistler in March a few years back and we were in long sleeve tshirts skiing.

I just booked a trip for 12/15-12/19 in whistler. Taking a little risk and hoping it works out.

It would only be worth the risk in a forecasted strong La Nina season.
