Most welcoming wineries? Cab preference, so locations like Margaux, Pauillac, St. estephe, etc. or anywhere in Medoc.

Read this book. Use it as a guideline for where to look and book.

Thanks, but I’m really just looking for recs for one or two if you have them. Just somewhere that’s welcoming to Americans who don’t know French. It’s a favor for a friend, so I’m not going to read a book about it.

Then gift him the book. It’s an easy and fantastic read.
ETA: I’d look at third to fifth growths. Easier to get into and much better priced. Unless he’s a real French wine snob but if he is he already knows where he wants to go.

Ok, thanks. Nah, they just want to taste a few wines and see the vineyards, etc. not exactly discriminating tasters. The Bordeaux wine trails has some good reviews, I’ll probably send them on that.

Exactly. Probably have better luck once your friend is in Bordeaux going to a wine shop or restaurant and tasting some wines and then asking a local for a recommendation.

Most of the wineries out there are not open to the public like they are in California. You have to make reservations for tours and tastings and I get the feeling that they are not expecting tourists looking for happy hour, but serious wine connoisseurs who are planning to ship home cases.

I would look at Chateau Palmer in Margaux (next to Chateau Margaux). You can probably email for an appointment. They make a fantastic Bordeaux blend and their wine sells from between $300 - $3,000 (depending on the year and age). We love it, but our last name is Palmer (lol).
We also went to Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. We tasted some wine selling for almost $2,000/bottle. It was fabulous. We also toured their label musuem. It was a great tour.
I would go to both of those websites and if there is not any tour information, send them an email to their contact page. I think we paid from $100 - $150/person for a first class tour and wine tasting.
Both well worth the money. We toured both of these in 2017.
We also went to Château Prieuré Lichine which was a little more touristy, but the wine was very good.
Try to avoid En Premier in Bordeaux from April 22 - 25 2024. We stayed at Chateau Grattequina outside of Bordeaux. A great value and location and very convenient to the wineries. The town of Bordeaux reminds me of New Orleans architecture (or vice versa).

My son and his fiancee just got back from a trip to the Bordeaux Region. His friend is a local sommelier there now and was able to get them a number of private tours. He said to look into:
Chateau Angludet
and
Château Pindefleurs
