Alaska - Hiking and Photography

I'm planning on visiting Anchorage the last week of August and spending time with some friends. Then they leave the first Tuesday of September and I plan to stay through until Saturday. That Tuesday to Saturday I want to do some solo camping, hiking, and photography.
Primitive camping is fine. Hiking wise, I like to hit summits. I'm fine with long-ish day hikes and don't mind some tougher stuff like scrambling up rock fields, snow fields, etc. I'll lug my camera around on the hikes too. Photo wise I'm just looking for great mountain landscapes (shouldn't be a problem in Alaska). I'd like to capture some images of Denali.
In Denali NP I see there are camp sites like this that look interesting. I feel like I may be limiting myself though, considering the 3 night minimum stay and having to rely on the bus for transportation. Would somewhere like Denali State Park be a better place to stay? It looks OK but not amazing.
I am also open to dispersed camping in random locations and any other recommendations in general. I don't have to spend much time at Denali if there are other locations with really aesthetic peaks and interesting hiking. Preferably not too far from Anchorage (4-5 hours).
Give me your suggestions.

Denali State Park. Just South of the National Park but easier access and great vies
Crow Pass Trail in Girdwood
Harding Icefield in Seward
Hatchery Pass
Denali Highway
Chugach State Park (Eagle River)
Pioneer Peak in Palmer.

Thanks. I was hoping you would answer. I will check that stuff out as soon as I get a chance.

I was in Alaska last month. I strongly believe driving the Seward Highway and hiking to Exit Glacier and the Harding Icefield is how you should spend one of your days.
If you want to cover a lot of great mountain scenery from a car, I would drive the Glenn Highway to Glennallen and then go south on the Richardson Highway to Valdez.

You're not gonna find a lot of those national geographic moments from the road system unless you're willing to hike. The most beautiful places in Ak are accessible by plane or boat.

I'm checking out these suggestions and it looks like there is plenty to do in the vicinity of Anchorage. I may skip Denali NP this time.
I'm going to search out more stuff but any more recs about that area would be great. Best glaciers?

From Anchorage area? Knik, Portage, Exit, Kenai Fjords, Prince William Sound
Portage to the Whittier Tunnel is gorgeous. Portage pass is a neat hike. Lots of hanging glaciers and the bigger Portage Glacier.

After Labor Day there is a 2 week period where you can drive your own vehicle into Denali. Don't remember if it's a lottery system to obtain one of the passes or if its open to anyone. I think it's by lottery.

It's a lottery system. Usually two to four days after the park closes.

You don't have to go all the way to Denali to get pics of the mountain. It's visible from Anchorage, but you can get some good shots in the Talkeetna area.

There are some good things to see on the road system.

Oh there are some great views, but the most spectacular places are a bit more dirricult to access. Places like Katmai and Lake Clark

Were you in Alaska when Timothy Treadwell was killed?

Yep. In fact I highly considered a position as a winter caretaker in the Katmai area that year. One of those things I really wish I had done.

What was the reaction of everyday Alaskans?

Hate to say but most joked about it. Everyone kinda knew this would be his fate. His ideas were wrong and he paid for it.

I believe he and his girlfriend are the only bear related fatalities in the 100 yr history of that park. even the movie about him makes clear he had mental issues

Not a lot of people get to Katmai and the ones that do stay in generally the same areas.
Salmon are so plentiful there that bears don't give humans much notice
Same here. There's an area I go to and the bears are almost within touching distance but don't pay any attention when the salmon are in. We have black and brown bear
