Most airlines will match other airlines status even if just temporary. I have status with United but needed to fly Delta so I just asked if they would match and they did. So the rest of the year I have both. Hotels do this too.

Did they "match" or "challenge" because I would assume it is the later and you had to meet a certain threshold of MQD and MQM to keep what I assume is Platinum.

Being based in MSY means I'm flying direct alot, but I'm also a United elite, so I do take connections if I need to hit a few more flights to reach an annual goal. Normally not a problem.

Domestic, I'd rather fly direct on a hanglider than connect in business class. Time is too valuable and missed connections are too common. Status is great, but if it's inconvenient or expensive, then it defeats its purpose

I'm probably in the minority but as a DM and 3MM with Delta, I do my best to fly Delta 100% of the time.

I schedule my own flights, and I have missed a single connection due to weather in the Northeast in almost 20 years of frequent flying.

I also don't leave 40 minutes of time to connect, and avoid northern and northeastern airports that are subject to capacity restrictions, weather delays, etc. I also avoid anything smaller than a 737, which are more likely to be culled from on time departures due to lower passenger count. I'm more spoiled than most since I've lived in 2 hub cities (IAH and ATL) my entire consulting life.

I'd rather connect in Frankfurt or SFO than IAD/EWR/ORD any, any, day of the week.

Living in hub cities and talking of Frankfurt means you're talking international, in which case I agree. I was referencing domestic. Is a slightly more comfortable seat and glass of champagne worth an extra 3 hours trip time and even the slightest risk of spending the night in an airport? I have lounge access through credit cards so lounge through status is mostly irrelevant, but there's no airport seat on earth more comfortable than my couch at home. The fastest way there is the best option.
