I am going to Vietnam in March and I booked first class tickets to HCM with points (pretty much depleting my account, sad day).
I am trying to find a creative way to get a cheap economy flight back from Da Nang to New Orleans. It doesn't have to be out of Vietnam though or into New Orleans. I can work those out later.
For example, there are $40 flights from Da Nang to Hong Kong so we can fly out of Hong Kong, but I can't find any reasonable flights from Hong Kong to the states.

Does anyone with experience traveling Asia know any routes that have good fares pop up back into the states? Hoping for something under $400.

Under $400 from Asia to the US???

While I know they’ve had some steep sales on Trans-pacific flights, you’ll be looking hard to find a sub-$400 flight that ultimately doesn’t cost you more in the long run (extra days in Asia, connection to a domestic fate that will be $300+, etc.)

You never know! I found $63 direct flights from Boston to Paris today (Oct 11th), and then spirit has $71 from Nola to Boston. So, for $134 you can get from New Orleans to Paris with only one stop. Not bad.

Problem is, I am not familiar enough with the Asian routes to have found a good deal yet. I have found flights within Asia for sub $50 though, so I think its possible.

Until that Spirit flight is delayed 29 hours and you’re SOL to CDG.

I have had some cheap ones from MSY to PEK, but not $400 cheap. That may be tough.

I already booked the tickets there with points, I just needed to get back. I Have to be in LA for work afterwards, so it works out. The 272 is American from pek to lax.

But you are right, I do need to look into the visa more thouroughly before booking. I thought there was a 72 hour window without a visa needed as long as you can prove you are in and out, but I’ll do some more research.

Be forewarned, Chinese airports can be fricking hell. And yes if your layover is long enough you'll need a visa which just adds to the potential headache. Add in the great Chinese firewall making internet almost obsolete on your phone, and layovers in China can suck greatly.

That being said, check out Air China and China Southern. They have some pretty cheap flights to the west coast. I've flown China Southern multi city round trip from Vietnam to L.A. then Bangkok to San Francisco for $480.

Like mentioned above, Chinese airports can suck and delays can and often so happen. I’ve never had trouble actually getting around PEK or PVG though.

You have to watch Air China. I quit using them as they are prone to cancelling flights and or moving them to another date.

You can get a transit visa fairly easy. If for some reason you need a real visa though it’s about $300 if you use a place like My China Visa and you have to get it prior to departure from the US.

Get a VPN if you need access to internet in China. I use witopia and have never had an issue getting access to blocked sites and I am in China 2 to 3 times a year.
