to all the good people giving advice. The wife and I are also doing an Austria/Germany trip in June.

Couple of piggyback questions in this thread:
Recommendations for Garmisch-Partenkirchen beside the gorge. Worth it to go up Zugspitze?

How is rothenburg ob der tauber?

28 Arrive in Munch - travel to Salzburg (3 nights) * On the trip to Salzburg we plan to stop by Fricking, Austria because I'm a child. We plan to be in Salzburg by lunch and plan to explore Old Town, Mozart's Birthplace, the Cathedral and will end the day at Hohensalzburg Fortress.

29 Salzburg * We have a Sound of Music tour booked for in the morning. Following the tour we plan to explore Salzburg some more and end the night at the Augustiner Braustubl.

30 Salzburg * Plan to do a day trip to Berchtesgaden. First going to the Eagles Nest and then the Berghof and bunkers at Hotel sun Turken before going onto the town of Berchtesgaden. We are also thinking of stopping by the St. Sebastian's Parish Church and Lake Hintersee. * If we do not do Berchtesgaden we are going to take the cog railway to the top of Schafberg. After Schafberg we are going to explore St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang.

31 Salzburg to Hallstatt (2 nights) * Plan to drive to Obertraun and go to the 5Fingers overlook. After the Overlook we plan to do the Heilbronner Circular Trail. June 1 Hallstatt * We have a Salt Mine tour in Hallstatt scheduled for in the morning. After the salt mine tour we plan on staying in Hallstatt relaxing near the lake. If the weather is nice we are planning on renting an electric boat to go out onto the water.

2 Hallstatt to Fussen (2 nights) * Plan on leaving our hotel in Hallstatt early and traveling to the Partnach Gorge. After exploring the Gorge we are planning on eating lunch in Garmish-Partenkirchen and then continuing onto the Ehrenburg Castle ruins and Highline 179. After the ruins/Highline we will continue onto Fussen.

3 Fussen * Neuschwanstein Castle tour scheduled for in the morning. Planning on stopping by the Marienbrucke Bridge on the way to/from the castle. After the castle we plan on going back to Fussen and exploring the Old Town.

Me and my family literally did this trip last year same time as you. You will love it.

My only thing is that you should consider staying in Munich at least 1 full day it’s a really cool city.

If you’re a history buff you’ll love Mozart’s home it’ll keep you there for at least an hour or two.

Salzburg also has garden by the river you should check out and this super old graveyard near the fort.
I’m also not sure if you’re in to hunting but there is a bad arse traditional German hunting store in Salzburg same side of the river as the fort but in the opposite direction. Apparently one of the prince of England frequents it as well as other famous outdoors man. Super expensive but worth looking around.

Hallstatt is remarkably beautiful it’s a hell of a drive up the mountains so bring a portable phone charge. Definite rent a boat on the lake, the town is super small so other than the salt mine tour you’re just stuck walking around for a short period.

Very jealous man y’all will have a ton a fun.

It's the best preserved Medieval wall-surrounded town in Germany, though touristy during the day.

IMO unless you can stay one night, you're gonna travel 2.5 hours each way from Munich to bump shoulders in the main square with a lot of Asian tourists. (And if that's your thing, go for it )

Rothenburg is at its best early in the morning and near dusk...the Nightwatchman's Tour makes the trip worthwhile itself. A jokester-type gives a great historical tour and at the end, literally tells you to go to Hell (a beer/wine spot he probably gets a kickback from)

If it's a Wednesday, head to the Altfraenkische Weinstube for the English Conversation Club.

While I might not go back to Rothenburg again, it's one of my favorite spots to reflect on from a 3-week trip. Sort of the place that comes to mind when you envision "Bavaria"

Junction, I've probably buried the lede here...

But if Munich is just an arrival spot, you're missing out on a place I've chosen to spend a few days in on all 3 Europe trips we've made. Whether it's just a quick visit to the Viktualienmarkt & Marienplatz or even the Augustiner spot near the train station, perhaps take a few hours to explore and shift some Salzburg stuff to Day 2.

However with your itinerary falling nicely into place, it might have to be a place you re-visit...a reason to go back. We found a way to spend a week in Bavaria even after our first was born. (I know it's a pre-kids trip)

Magician - We are loving this trip so far. The weather has been bad the first two days (rained ~95% of time) and put a damper on the SOM tour, but there's been no rain today and the fog lifted a few hours ago so we've taken advantage of it.

We've done Mozart's home and the cemetery. My wife was bored with Mozart after thirty minutes, but we both really enjoyed walking the cemetery, the flowers were blooming and at times your forgot where you were. Also did the Augustiner Mulin Beer-garden last night and had an awesome time. Met two other couples from the States.

Radar looks good for the two days in Hallstatt, crossing our fingers!

drock - We will be back and when we do we will definitely make time to stop in Munich. To many good things have been said on this thread not too!
