Would this be a good network switch?

It’s been on my to-do list to run network cables to 5 rooms in the house.

I plan on having the switch plugged and powered up in the attic. But I’m curious with this being fanless. Would this hold out!

What are the project attic temps..Temps... say july-aug?

The switch is likely adequate for most home users as far as switching fabric....but the cheap ones don't tolerate a lot of heat for very long.

In the heat of the summer, it’s about 90deg max up there.

It's a good switch, but I'd suggest get the manageded version. It's only $30. That way you have a switch that supports VLANs if you need in the future.

I'd suggest not putting it in the attic though. Find a closet you can put this in. I wouldn't put any electronics in the attic.

My attic is considered semi-conditioned space, spray in insulation, it only gets to 84F in Aug here in SE LA. I use an actively cooled POE switch in the attic for my POE cameras and access points so the cabling stays in the attic.

For the curious, I use Cisco 2960-S series switches. (Might be a teeeeny bit more than a little overkill for most).

I’ve got a Unifi Switch Flex in a sprayed in attic at my father in law’s house. We are currently at the one-year anniversary of deployment and no problems.

I’ve debated spraying mine. One thing in the “plus” column is that I’d feel super comfortable pulling my rack from my old CRT cabinet into the attic if it comes out anything like his did.

I wouldn’t want a switch in an attic otherwise, though, unless I were much farther north.

Why do you laugh?

I have it running in my network at home with multiple VLANs. Zero issues with speed or reliability with the switch.

your typical home user isn't worried about running multiple VLANs in their home..Odds are you're overkilling yours anyway

I think it's about time we start talking about VLANs and "normalizing" the idea of using them given how many random chinese devices we tend to connect to our networks these days.

Just making VLANs on a switch doesn't do any good if you aren't making changes at the firewall level

Disagree, simply isolating your computers and other important devices from the insecure IoT devices is always a good thing. Of course additional measures at the border should be taken, but each is a step in the process to securing things.
