We have ring cameras around the house, I know they are not the best but they are pretty good. So twice this week there were close calls with the kids bus. Well once wasn't a close call, one was a dumbass went around the bus and took out a mirror.. the other was just a dumbass screeching around the bus because they can't wait 10 seconds for a few kids to get on the bus. I don't think pointing a ring cam will have the range we need but I don't want to run wires. I don't need it to work like the ring with alerts and such. The ability to pull it up in wifi range and the ability for it to record a week or so onboard would be nice. It doesn't need to show the across the street neighbors camel toe but something good enough to identify a car and plate would be nice. The busses camera footage apparently sucks. I really don't want to run a wire and I don't mind swapping batteries, we already do it for our ring cameras.

Anything battery operated you're going to have to mount it at the bus stop to catch anything. If it's too far away the PIR sensor won't trigger and it won't record anything. If it were to trigger for every little thing in the distance you would be swapping batteries possibly several times per day. And if your street is busy you might be swapping batteries that often anyway with it mounted at the stop.

You could get one with a solar panel to maybe keep the battery topped off, but that might be a bit unsightly out at the bus stop.

Maybe look at a trail camera with video mode.

Adding a solar panel is fine, its not that far away. I can mount it to the far right corner under my eve and point it at the intersection. Even just running it like 715 am til 745am and like 4pm to 430 pm would be fine. I don't think it is going to help but it will make the wife unit fell better. BRPD doesn't do anything anyway, according to the bus driver BRPD didn't even bother to pursue the HIT AND RUN of a SCHOOL BUS that they had VIDEO of the incident. It was minor damage, just a busted mirror, but still you can't HIT A SCHOOL BUS AND RUN, well I guess unless BRPD is investigating. I have no doubts there was more to the at fault drivers history to cause them to flee.

I think a car plate will not be easy to get with a cheap cam. Would need something really high end resolution.

Misdemeanors, most police departments don't care these days.

If it's a high traffic area, even with solar you might drain the batteries, it will be constantly triggered. So like you said, you'll need to turn it on and off every morning and afternoon, which will be a pain, or get some chinese version with an API you can control.

I will recommend that since OP wants to mount it on the house, it should be plugged into a power source whether wifi w/110 or preferably just get a PoE camera. Running wires really isn't all that hard, it's an investment of a few hours that will save many more hours of hassle dealing with batteries.

It could be as easy as running an extension cord in the attic to power a wifi camera.

Absolutely this. Wired is just better 99.9 percent of the time.

BUT, if you want something like that I'd suggest mounting something like this on your bus stop. Capturing a plate will be more difficult with a faster moving vehicle using typical home security cameras. Make and model are pretty easy though. There are tons of brands, reolink, amcrest, lorex, night owl, arlo....

I have a reolink system so I'd get something like Reolink Argus Pro

This guy demos tons of cameras and may help you out. Youtube

Regarding BRPD. If you go to them with a traffic violation they likely won't do much. If you have video of a hit and run they may be able to make an arrest. At best you could request them to sit in the area and write traffic citations, although you will probably have better luck with the sheriff's office if they are willing to work it in the city limits.

If you have an HOA maybe they could look into LPR cameras. I think they run about 6k per camera and use a monthly cellular data connection for connectivity. There are probably cheaper DIY options but I've never gotten much into those.
