Outside of aesthetics, is there a reason to go with the wired version? I'm thinking if the thing fails, it sure would be nicer to just unplug and plug a new one in and pair it. I've gotten spoiled on these and am including them in the barndo buildout.

coming from someone with a whole box of no-longer-working smart outlets and 4 iHome 'smart plugs' where the company is pulling the plug on their cloud service I can tell you its far less of a pain in the arse to throw away a smart plug than removing a wired outlet.

its all shite. none of this crap lasts and god help you if you go wifi and depend on 'random cool company of the day' to keep the thing running 3 years from now when they're bankrupt.

Thanks, I've got a couple of the KASA from Amazon plug ins that are about 3 years old and have been trouble free, so far, and some same-mfr light switches that are about a year old. I guess staying away from the wired outlet will be the plan.

I am in the process of replacing all of my wired smart light switches. Between disconnecting from Wi-Fi, and the fact that they leach energy constantly, they aren’t worth it imo

hence why you need to buy Tuya devices. I havent looked lately to see if they have solved the tuya convert problem, but you can always take them apart and flash tasmota.

Were the switches that were disconnecting in the same box? I did have that issue when i first installed but was lucky in that one circuit was a 3 way switch and i could move the switch away and it hasn't dropped since.

i am in love with lutron. the rest of the smart switches i have can die in a fire for all i care. GE/jasco, leviton, quirky (god help me) and the rest of the nonsense has always been a problem. i can finagle them into working but when you consider how much time and energy i've spent over the last 7 years keeping them going, the extra lutron charges for a damn rock-solid solution is well worth it. plus lutron has a patented system that works with or without a third wire so there's that. oh and the little pico they throw in for 'shits and grins' is the perfect 3-way switch solution. even the batteries in lutron last like 5 years.

live and learn i suppose.

but yes, carramrod. i *can* resurrect these dead smart outlets & crap; they are ultimately zigbee after all but i have less and less enthusiasm to keep at it after all these years.

i'm old and cranky and just want shite to work without constantly screwing with it.

I’ve had good luck with Kasa wired and plugs. If the wired switches lose connection it’s pretty easy to reconnect them, but the only time I have to do that is if I get a new router or change my router password.

Same. Occasionally get a slight delay with Google assistant.

Does anyone have any experience with the Wyze plug in type outlets? I bought a couple to use for exterior Christmas lights. Figured they would work out well being able to use them as timers and then override them with the app if I ever need to.

my only input is to look for 2.4ghz vs 5ghz on the box. its not impossible to connect 2.4 devices these days but newer routers & mesh systems can make it a bit of a pain since they don't explicitly break out the 2 different networks like the older systems.

when i moved from asus to eero, i realized about 2/3 of my smart crap was 2.4 and there was a special setting you had to change in the router to add them. not a huge deal; but until i found that setting by browsing the eero forums, i had no way to connect them.

Kasa mini-plug for receptacles and Kasa hard wired switches have been trouble free two years running now. I had two outdoor pigtail plugs go bad, but even those lasted over a year exposed to the elements on a coastal boat house. Probably the best "smart" product I have ever purchased.
