Windows 10 help!

Losing my mind over here. Just finished a new pc build - I'm by no means and expert, but have done this every four years or so for twenty years.
I keep getting an "there is not enough memory to complete this operation" error when trying to copy folders from my external HD back on to my C ssd. C drive has 900GB free and I have 16GB of RAM.
WTF is going on?!?!
I've scoured the net all morning for a fix and the only thing that comes up is that it might have something to do with folder permissions rather than actual memory.
And yes, both drives are NTFS.

Are any of the file names over 255 characters (including folder path)?

I don't think so, but we're talking 1000's of files!
Just a side note, I finally got around to upgrading to Windows 10 about two months ago on my old system and did this exact same recovery procedure (loading all of my personal stuff from external HD back on the C drive) and it worked fine. I used the exact same Win 10 installation USB for this build.

Frick this shite. I'm so pissed I can't see straight. Have already wasted about 9 hours trying to troubleshoot this mfkr.
Maybe reinstall OS and not do any of the Windows updates?

Doesn't seem to be a problem with permissions or anything. I have no idea. Almost as if while copying from external to internal drive the RAM somehow fills up and bogs down or something to trigger that error.

Have you tried copying just a folder at a time and seeing if that works? Like, are you trying to copy all of them at once?

Yeah, sometimes I can copy one file at a time - t's hit or miss. Such a clusterfrick.

Update: switched my external HD to a USB 2 port instead of the 3 and now i'm able to transfer files and folders back on to my ssd C (albeit slower lol).
I have no idea what the problem is/was - I know just enough to navigate my way around a cpu. Haven't tried this with any of the rear ports yet, although everything currently plugged in has been working fine (mouse, keyboard, printer, wifi network adapter, headsets).

Sounds like a usb 3.0 driver issue obviously. Maybe check for firmware updates on that mb or usb expansion pack

Check the motherboard's manufacturer's site for updated BIOS and drivers (you may be able to get the drivers from a Windows Update).

Wouldn't that be picked up with the superfetch feature in Windows 10?
Windows 10 came stock on my computer when I bought it. It is a MEMORY HOG. Bought and set up a computer for a buddy. It had 8g of memory which is a little on the low side for modern computers but he literally only surfs youtube. The thing ran slow as molasses. The McAfee package that comes on the computer was causing it to bog. Uninstalled that and it cleared up. Put AVG on the computer once we uninstalled McAfee.

Try plugping the external HDD to Windows 10 and just go to device properties ->tools; and select and run scan, and repair. Once completed again, try copying your files

Superfetch just makes programs load faster (it pre-loads your most-used programs), it doesn't have anything to do with drivers or BIOS updates.

I've installed 10 on 4gb RAM machines and it runs well enough for light Office use but yeah it really wants 8gb (5-6, if you want to get more precise) to work well.

It's always best to go through and uninstall all the bloat that comes with any version of Windows and 10 is definitely no exception. Unless you do a bit of work with Powershell, a .wim file, ADK and Audit mode then every profile you create in Windows 10 will have certain set crapware in it (Sway, the MS entertainment apps, some internet games, etc).

I assume you loaded the chipset drivers. I'm over ten year on this build, so out of the loop. May be a dumb question now.

I wouldn't even use AVG. Windows Defender works fine on it's own IMO. Best thing to do is load Windows 10 LTSB which completely strips out all bloatware and spyware from Windows 10.
