Will a cable modem router combo work with fiber if you just use the router WiFi portion?

I hope that question makes sense. My parents new house has fiber and will be using the company supplied ONU. I’m wondering if I can just plug the ONU into the Ethernet port of the router combo without obviously connecting the cable modem part of it, and if it will still work?

I would think it should right out of the box. The wireless ports are generally assigned the LAN segment so that wireless clients can reach the local network.

No, that won't work. Internet traffic is routed through the router's WAN port. That's the COAX port on a cable gateway.
For fiber your parents are going to need a router with an RJ45 WAN port. Some ISPs, like AT&T, require customers to use their routers. Other ISPs allow you to supply your own. So check with the ISP before you buy anything.

OP says they already have a router in place.... so yes connect the wifi LAN to the router via ethernet....if needed set up the LAN network with the fiber/router as the gateway, decide which will provide DHCP and you should be golden.

As I understand it, the OP has two devices:
1. ONU
2. Cable Modem/Router
There is no "fiber/router" in this scenario. The ONU is a dumb device like a modem. It's not a router. It doesn't do DHCP or NAT.

Yeah that’s exactly right.
Would I not be able to just take an Ethernet cable from the lan port on the ONU directly into one of the lan ports on the router essentially providing it with internet access? Without connecting the cable modem portion of the router combo?

if this is att, no. they requre their own routers for the security certificate. theres ways to clone it and use ubiquity gear but thats probably too much for the normal person.

Nah, it’s some small local company I believe.

quote:No, I don't think so. Unless this modem/router unit has an ethernet port labeled "WAN" or an option in the firmware to use a specific LAN port for the WAN (and I doubt it but anything is possible), then it's not going to work.

This is one of the many downsides of these combo units. And they usually suck anyway. Just get a mesh wifi system and call it a day.
