Hi guys

can anyone explain in simple terms when i setup a new extender for my parents, what do i need to put it on, 2.4 or 5g?

they have 1000mb in a 2400 sq foot home and there current fiber modem sucks, so im getting them a basic TP-Link $30 extender and i have to choose one setting.

Thanks

Throughput is higher for 5GHz, while 2.4GHz has greater coverage range. Most routers have both and both can be active at the same time.

I would like to get my home wifi to my shop, that is about 200ft away from my home. Shop is a metal building so not sure if / how it would work..

Wifi is going to be extremely spotty at best through metal at that range. Even if you put an access point on the exterior of your house, I believe the signal inside the shop is going to be extremely weak and frustrating.

You basically have two options:

1. run an ethernet cable out to the shop. If you don't want to lay conduit, there is direct burial cat6 that you can use. This is of course a lot of work, and may not even be feasible depending on layout and obstacles.

2. (recommended) set up a wireless bridge (I like the Ubiquiti Nanobeams, though there are other options from Ubiquiti and other companies). Once installed and aligned, these wireless bridges work just as if you had run a cable. You will have to run cat6 from your home router/switch to the exterior of the house to one device, then on the remote shop another device will be mounted with cat6 run to the interior where it can be plugged into another switch/router.
