Who sold me out, Amazon or Apple?

I have an iPhone and the only Google app I have, Maps, doesn't have mic access. I also have an Echo dot. Last night I had a conversation with my wife about how it's too bad we didn't have a smart garage door opener. This morning I see an ad not only for a smart garage door opener but how to turn the brand I own into a smart garage door opener. The ad is served by Double Click, which is the ad network owned by Google. Google should not be privy to that conversation, so who sold me out to Google, Apple or Amazon?
I just clicked the ad and what's even worse, it was an ad for a product on Best Buy while I was browsing BestBuy.com So I was not only sold out to Google but Best Buy as well. This is a pretty innocuous and actually useful violation of my privacy, but it just is kind of scary how much sharing appears to be going on from companies I didn't think had much motivation to share.

Could be any app installed your phone.
That being said your wife may of searched for said garage door opener and you are getting the ad because you're on the same IP address.

I just checked and the only app I’ve given mic access too is the Amazon Fire TV remote app. You’re right in that it could be apps on my wife’s phone. I just don’t see Amazon helping Best Buy serve relevant ads through Google, but it seems like the simplest explanation.

I don't Facebook and she only does Facebook in the browser on her phone because the Facebook app wants to grab all the data. I really think it's Amazon though, that makes the most sense even though it's a bit counter intuitive.

You are positive neither of you did a search on your phone or computer? That seems far more likely.

I know it wasn't me and I asked her and she said no and immediately blamed the treacherous Alexa. I've been in these threads by other guys too suggesting plausible alternative theories, but I think this tech and data sharing is way ahead of where I and many others thought it was.

We were driving down the road and a Maserati pulled out of the high school construction site. I made a comment about I?t and continued on.
Once we got to our destination, there were advertisements on my phone for Maserati leases. Incredible. She didn’t believe I?t was “listening” to us, but neither of us have researched Maseratis.
We did a test with a random thing to see if I?t would show up on either of our phones. So far, I have not seen an ad for this test item.

We are coming to the point where we should be concerned about this kind of stuff.
The voice recognition software plus smart televisions and other devices in our homes and cars makes us pretty easy to surveil and manipulate without our understanding of what is taking place. If our refrigerators just say "frick you Jin Yang"
that's a best case scenario.

Yeah, I thought I was at least somewhat controlling it by only using companies I thought had financial incentives to keep my data to themselves, but if Amazon is selling user data to Google and Best Buy, what seems like happened here, there is no where to be safe other than being off grid. Even then, Google is saying their Home can tell the difference between users, so how long until other people's phones are used to monitor those that choose to stay "off grid"?
