no joke, I have a 7 dollar RCA antenna I bought out a bargain bin and I get like 50 channels. Granted, I'm in metairie so I assume it has more to do with how close I am to the stations rather than the antenna itself.

If you are in the city you can get away with a cheap version, if not get a good antenna and place in your attic if you cannot place it outside

I have trouble picking up stations that broadcast from the other side of the city. I started with a regular Mohu Leaf and didn't get much, so I moved up to a Mohu Leaf Supreme and that gets everything I want locally.

They are becoming hard to find, but any of the Silver Sensors. Zenith and Philips both made one. There's a few on ebay now, but they ship from UK.
