It's the smaller one, not the 500gb version. Also, it's only like 2-3 months old. Bought it from my local bestbuy.
Sounds good. What are you thinking?

A shield can do anything a firestick can, and more, much more.
Besides being a great Plex server, it's super quick menu never lags, doesn't need to be jail broken, is perfect for iptv apps and terrarium, haystack etc etc.
The menu is made to be a full-time replacement for the cable box and DVD player mess. It's super slick and fast.
It's an incredible emulator, plays almost every console from the past starting from the Atari 2600 up to the PS1 & Wii.
The firestick is a good option to accentuate the cable TV but the shield is a legit replacement for cable and a Much better experience.
We have three Shield TVs and they are worth every penny as we don't have cable TV. Just 50Mps cable internet, PSVue and all the apps and wmus loaded on each box.
So far there are no other devices that offer a better smoother experience for cutting the cord in such a well laid out fashion.

Which apps and wmus do you find are most useful for your experience?

That was a typo, I meant emus.
Apps: PSVue, VLC, Youtube, Youtube Kids,
Smart iptv, Downloader, Terrarium, IPVanish, Newsmax, Haystack, Newsy, Pandora, iHeart Radio, etc etc. Many if not all are available on much slower devices.
Emus:
Retroarch (multi emu player)
LINK
With Shield you get access to the Play store as well as all the alternative app stores. No jail breaking required to set it up or run any app.
Here's a great comparison from Dimi comparing boxes and sticks in 2018:

Also forgot to mention the Nvidia games market, it's a beast of a console. Not only can you play all Android games but you have access to much higher end games on the Nvidia market.
And if you have an Nvidia GPU in your PC you can log into a Nvidia game profile and play your PC games on the Shield through streaming.

The gaming sounds intriguing. How does it do as a Mame emulator?
What are you using to play those other game systems?

LOL. I see there are a lot of dissenters. Pretty sure I wasn't transcoding, but for whatever reason it was sucking a$$. I use a Synology NAS (with transcoding) and it far outpaces what my NVidia Shield would do. But, glad to hear you guys had a better experience than I did. Don't get me wrong, I love my Shield and would buy another one in a heartbeat.

The built in specs have it at or slightly better than og Xbox specs.
M.A.M.E., FBA & NeoGeo are flawless.
I use retroarch for a front end me u system that incorporates every needed emu into it. It also loads all the Doom games and mods plus cover art for most games.
I have a dolphin, psx and dreamcast emulator installed to go along with it. Rasberrty our is arse compared to this beast, it's hard to believe Nvidia released this 2 years ago.

Damn we need to become best friends.
I used to be high up in the mame community..I ran a website that managed all the materials outside of the roms you needed to have a complete setup.
But that was years ago. I don't even know where to source roms these days.
I ran mame on a PC before.

If you have a FireTV set up for cord cutting how you want, you probably don't need/shouldn't get the Shield.
But, it is a powerful piece of hardware, can run Plex onboard, sideload Kodi, Terrarium TV - it is almost an all-in-one cord cutting solution (except HD antenna, of course).

i gave up on streaming services about a year ago. kodi was constant nonsense and a time-drain to keep it fed and happy.

Well, I can say I completely understand and sympathize. About all I use Kodi for is some IPTV applications that are very hit and miss.
Terrarium TV is legit, though. A little learning curve and they want to futz around with the player and ad support, but overall, solid A-/B+ for content and relative ease of use. It's multiplatform, too, so you can run it on PC, Android box, Android phones/tablets. I've been almost 100% Terrarium for over a year.

Got a shield for a bday present with kodi titanium build and subscription to premiumizeme and real debrid so all I do is watch movies and tv shows. Still can have intermittent issues but overall pretty solid. I personally wouldn’t pay $200 for it for just the things I do, I’m sure you can do a lot more but I don’t really have the time or want to mess around with it
