What level receiver do I need?

I currently have a 5.2 Sony receiver with 5 speakers in the ceiling and two speakers outside on the back porch. I have had issues with the outdoor speakers playing and had an electrician come out today to look at the whole deal because I initially thought the control know on the back wall wasn't getting power.
Long story short he said the issue is likely with the receiver and I should look at a 7 channel receiver. Mostly concerned with being able to play music on the back porch without having the indoor speakers on.
I have a Sony STR-DN850. If this won't work what should I look at buying?? I don't need top of the line as it's not a premium set-up.

Na, you just need one with zones. If you buy a 7 channel atmos receiver, that is intended for surround sound. Probably can play 7 channel stereo, but ceiling speakers will be on as well as porch. If you have zones you can select.

You need 5.2.2… Check out the Onkyo TX-NR696

He probably doesn’t have a clue
But you would need a 7 channel receiver with a power zone 2.

Or a simple sonos connect amp. But anything with multiple zones will work.

If this is what you want (2 zones, 2 sources, and no desire to have the two do the same thing at any time…if you want inside sound outside or the whole thing to play the same music, that’s another story- you want a 2-zone 7.x receiver then), you can do something like a Lepai 2020 Class D amp for about $40 with a Bluetooth adapter.
Better solutions will cost more. But if you want to be able to flip music on outside for cheap, that’d be a pretty cheap setup that will get music outside without turning the onside speakers. But you won’t be able to play inside stuff outside or outside stuff inside.

No he doesn't. He needs dual zone capability, not 5 channels with 2 subs and 2 ceiling.

If you have a Costco membership they sell a 7 channel denon around $4-500 I can’t remember the price exactly 4K hdmi etc I think you can setup the rears to be zone 2 and The heos /denon apps are ok

Entry level 7 channel Denon would be perfect. I have the same setup and run the Denon AVR-S960H, 5.1 in the living room and 2 outdoor speakers on my back patio set as Zone 2. Can control Zone 2 independently using the remote, or the HEOS app, or the Denon control app.
Here is a really cheap option; have heard good things about Denon refurbs.
AVR-S760H-R
