For personal photos and videos. And some misc. Documents and files.
I don't like the idea of Google sharing facial recognition information for my kids. Is there another option or is Google basically the way to go?

if you have Prime, you get unlimited photo storage included.
Privacy wise, MEGA is probably the best.

Opt out of global data surveillance programs like PRISM, XKeyscore and Tempora.
Help make mass surveillance of entire populations uneconomical! We all have a right to privacy, which you can exercise today by encrypting your communications and ending your reliance on proprietary services.

If you don't want to go full conspiracy theorist, OneDrive is easy to use (backs up your camera roll if you enable it, etc.) OneDrive also has a "super secret" Personal Vault where you can put tax returns, etc. I don't bother, though, my SSN costs less than the lunch I bring to work.
Big plus is that it's easy for a layman to use, unlike some of the other services. Word of warning, it sounds like you're probably using an Android phone, which means there is a lot of other stuff you need to disable besides just photos to protect your kids' photos, emails, texts, etc.

Well, big brother surveillance is not a conspiracy or a theory- just a fact.
As individuals, we can decide to voluntarily participate or opt out.

burger bearcat-
As a concerned parent, you might find this guy's site interesting or useful:
The Privacy Dad's Blog
And remember, 'cloud' just means 'somebody else's' computer or network.

The Privacy Dad's blog is for anyone, but especially for people new to digital privacy. I've therefore organised my posts in this way:

Parents can read about my experiences with digital privacy as a parent.
I also have a glossary, opinion articles, interviews, and reviews.
