Using standard deviation in excel to check for errors

Is this a realistic way to check for errors in excel? The formula is pretty simple and once you build a large enough dataset, I think it could be a start. What do the tech people think?

Errors in what? What kind of error?

It’s a realistic way to illuminate outliers.

That’s what I’m thinking. At the very least, it can point you to the right direction of what’s wrong.

Do you mean the Z score for a given observation? Standard deviation by itself will just tell you how much variation there is for a sample or the entire population.
At any rate, nothing will confirm there is an error. In fact, you can get yourself in a subtle bit of trouble by only taking a close look at observations with a high Z score and ignoring the rest. Just because something fits in with the rest of the population doesn't mean it is correct.

All standard deviation can tell you is if some data points are well inside or well outside the mean.
You can set up a conditonal to highlight of certain st devs are above a certain value.

This is less of a tech question and more of a business analytics question. You are going to need to give much more detail or what you are trying to do for us to be helpful...context is really important and a number of posters have laid out potential uses cases for standard devotions, zscores, conditional formatting, but there is no way for us to tell you what is the appropriate approach.
